Cyberpower XPLORER X64 9700= MSI 1029; Yay or Nay??

I was planning to build this notebook myself. Looks like Cyberpower sells this notebook for a couple of bucks more than it would take for me to build one. They don't offer the bluetooth option but I figure I can probably install that myself.

What's the word on Cyberpower?? Their reseller ratings leave something to be desired with a six month rating of 7.84 and lifetime rating of 7.05. Customer service hovers at a six. People seemed upset at the time it took for their system to ship. Also, some people allege their PCs shipped with missing stuff like powercords or with wrong parts. Worrisome.

Any good or bad experiences with these guys?? Thanks.

MSI > Cybpower
GFX power: MSI > Cyberpower :: there is just no way an older series GFX card can beat a new one here, MSI x700 has 8Pipelines the other has 4....
CPU power: Cyberpower > MSI :: MSI was built for mobilty and the other na.. MSI has the MT-30 series which uses 25 watts (they have a L2 Cache of 1MB too)[Not the MT-32 try to stay away from that one] While Cyberpower > an whopping of 62 Watts and unless you have a 3400+ (or was 3600+) you can only have 512 L2 Cache.
Battery Life: MSI > Cyberpower :: The new series GFX card has a new power control center to maintance the battery life basically. The Turion (from above uses 25watts) i forgot to mention it stay extremely cool as well, unlike the Althon 64 the fan it needs to run alot more.
Gaming: MSI >Cypbpower :: The CPU is better on the CP but MSI is better cause of the GFX card, and it's much more newer as well.

Note: I have a friend that brought a Cyberpower for the HF-2 coupon, but anyways it's okay as other kind of laptops, but the thing i didn't like it because of the old version of the video card, 9700?!?!? that's pretty old, but he was able to play half-life 2.
I personally would go to MSI-1029 and I'm getting it pretty soon .

you misunderstand... the cyberpower notebook IS the MSI-1029

Aside from the fact it says MSI-1029 Notebook in the configuration, it has all of the same specs and appearence

I'm asking whether or not Cyberpower is a company that one should by a notebook from based on the expereinces of people on the board and their overall reputation.

I dont know anything about cyberpower, but why not buy it from www.xmeld.com? Their site says that they have them in stock, but you might have to wait about 10 days. Xmeld has a 5% discount for students and they also offer a 2 or 3 year extended warranty, which I dont think Cyberpower does. The warranty is just for the barebone itself from MSI.

Based on their reseller reviews, it seemed to be hit-or-miss. In other words, some love them and some hate them, and there aren't many people in between. The consistent comments to remember are:
1.) low price=low priority: systems often arrive nearly a month after they were ordered, so if you buy from them, make sure you don't need your notebook within the next couple weeks
2.) Cyberpower provides little or no documentation with their system, leaving the end user to figure a lot out for themselves. I'm assuming you're fairly computer-savvy, so this may not be a big deal to you, but it can make using some features tricky if you don't have a manual that tells you what they are or how to use them.

other then that, they use good notebooks and their painting price is unbeatable (compare $100 painting cost from CP vs. $800 several other places)

A similarly configured system at xmeld is about $230 bucks more currently. Xmeld forces you to buy Windows XP. I can get Windows Xp for $15 a pop at my bookstore and already have an extra disc.

Both companies have the 5% discount.

I don't need much documentation.

I've built several desktops systems and the MSI 1029 installation guide is on the MSI website and looks extremely straightforward.

Also, Xmeld offers absoultely no refunds while Cyberpower offers one minus a 15% restocking fee.

I'm worried that if the system is defective then these guys are going to dick around for several months. I was hoping that some people on the forum had dealings with them and could comment to their experience.

i can install the MSI wifi/bluetooth card myself as cyberpower doesn't carry it... not a big deal, very starightforward

i'm just a little uneasy about dealing with a company with a not-so-great reputation

look at their website... when you configure the MSI 1029 it says enter a word in the coupon box when you check out

the word is instant i think... it's on the website
post #13 of 32
"5% Instant Rebate for purchasing any system over $999 (Must Enter Coupon Code "Instant"). Offer ends 8/21/05 at 11:59 PM P.S.T. " that's torromow

yup... but i'm not sweating it... when i did my comparison i didn't include the discount from either site

the price is still very good without the discount

this is a major purchase so I need to be absolutely confident before purchasing and I will not reach that level of confidence by tomorrow night

haha, Well I'm also waiting to make sure MSI release there new Video card driver (5.8) the website mobile version doesn't work, although it does past the test. After they release it , we will have about 256MB of Video ram (of course 128 is from system RAM) but still they say it's gonna help prove over all performance. What you buying laptop for anyways btacular?

a system i can use when i travel... which is at least once a month

I moonlight and am away from home for 2-3 days at a time in addition to other travel

I want a nice notebook 6.5 pounds or less with a X700V or Geforce 6600 Go equivalent and Turion 1.8 ghz/1 MB or Pentium M 2.0... i'll be doing mundane things like work and checking e-mail, but i'm also an avid gamer and i'd like something I could play fps and Guild Wars on when I'm away from home.

I'll also use it to play DVDs.

I had a MSI 1029 for a few days. The notebook has a antina for bluetooth so the mini PC card has to be a WIFI + blur tooth because of only one mini PC slot. Make sure that the memory you get is cas 3 and not cas 2.5 or cas 2 if using DDR400. Cas 3 works great but Cas 2.5 or Cas 2 will not post.

The cooling for the CPU and VPU is all one unit. There is one heat pipe that cools both CPU and VPU. The mem for the X700 is Hynix -2.8 (DDR700/350).

i live in Louisiana so I'm pretty sure they won't add taxes as Louisiana is devoid of high tech industry

thanks for the tips Sniping Waste

Sniping Waste, will you be doing a review with pictures and some screen shots??

I think Cyperpower has a very good deal for the MSI MS-1029 system (Turion 64 + 128MB X700)! But I too live in California and I like to avoid taxes if possible so I'm still looking for this system elsewhere... nice price for such a system though!
