Help! ACPI.SYS is still $%#*& corrupt!

8887. WinXP Pro. Power failure on shutdown, now it's a big paperweight! (a heavy one too). Tried swapping RAM with new known good - same error. Bios memory check on startup shows no memory errors.

Tried new HD, same error.

Tried repair install from WinXP Pro disk, same error.

Tried fresh install from WinXP Pro disk, same error.

Tried clearing cmos, same error.

Tried resetting default cmos, same error. Tried 'last best known settings', same error. I've tried everything that's obvious to me.

Aside from spending much $$ and waiting weeks on end for Sager tech support, anyone have any freakin' ideas???

Thanks

Remo

can you boot from floppy?

What is the exact error?

Yes, can boot from floppy. Using a WinXP boot disk, C: drive is not available or recognized. BIOS does recognize it.

The exact error shown during winxp install / repair is

The file acpi.sys is corrupt.

Press any key to restart.

Then it happens again.

you say that even with a different hd you still get the same message?
have you tried to run an exhaustive memory test?

Ran full memory test from BIOS - no errors. Tried a known and good new RAM chip - still get the error message.
XP Install disk is original.

Updates : Although WinXP installs have failed repeatedly, after much #$#$(*#4 with, a Win2K install actually took!!! wooohoo!!! Although I want XP, I'll try an upgrade install after ghosting the new hd.
Weird huh? I bought this system used on Ebay and it came with win2K, so come to think of it, I've never had to install winxp fresh. But I can't imagine what would prevent xp but allow 2K as an initial install.

Have you checked to see if there are any bios updates? I once had a similar problem with a desktop. There was something about the new power management features in winXP that was giving the motherboard indigestion. Since 2000 is older it would stand to reason that the features that are in conflict might not be present.

Good idea. Except that I had installed winxp previously with this same bios. After the power failure during shutdown of xp, this problem has arisen.
