6000D vs. 600m

So it's down to these 2 laptops:
6000
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 725 (1.60 GHz)
512MB DDR2 SDRAM
64MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY™ RADEON X300 PCI Express x16 Graphics
60GB Hard Drive
for: $927

600m
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 725 (1.60 GHz)
768MB DDR2 SDRAM
64MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY™ RADEON 9000 AGP 4x Graphics
80GB Hard Drive
for: $900

What I want to know is how good the graphic card for 600m(radeon 9000). While this is mostly for college and schoolwork, I want to able to plays games like CS:S, WC3, diablo. The 6000 has better design(IMO), more sturdy, and better video card. But I can get the 600m for slightly cheaper with more RAM and HD. Which one would you get?

if you are getting the 6000D it def worth going for the 128mb x300 instead. Also as your going for the 725 in the 6000D you can pin mod it to a 2.12.... The 600m with its 400 FSB can not be pin modded...

The 600m is smaller and more portable.... however its based on older technology.. and the old style Dell case.

So taking all this into account i would go for the 6000D.

The ATI's MOBILITY™ RADEON 9000 is pretty weak. I had the Radeon 9200, and it was the reason I upgraded to the 9300.

The M9000 can take it's share of games. I can play BF2 on my 600m with no problems. However, if you want better graphics get the 6000D. I like the smaller size of the 600m over the 6000 which is why I got one. My 8300 is my gaming machine.

I heard the 6000 is more durable than the 600m, but how much more durable and sturdy is the 6000? is there a big difference?
I want this laptop to last me at least 3 years, hopefully 4.

I was in somewhat of the same situation as you. And I ended up going with the 6000d. It has the better graphics card.... a widescreen(does the 600 have one)... and is based on a newer model. The 600 I believe is getting weeded out next year or something like it. Its still a good machine, but it might be getting upgraded.

And about sturdiness... the 6000 from my experience is quite sturdy, the base is very well done and nothing feels too tacky. The LCD monior is also pretty solid. It's a little wiggly when you have it closed.(Mine isn't 100% snug when its shut, it has a micro millimeter of play which is noticable) However, when its open... its very sturdy and solid.

Now I have not had any good hands on experience with the 600,but from what I've read and heard it is a tad more unstable in its design. By no means bad, but just a tick on the flimsier side.

Also, I'd consider waiting for a really good deal on one unless it is urgent. Every once in awhile they'll throw a 6000d configuration out there that is different from the 3 base models of low, mid-range, and High. It has the goodies of the dedicated graphics card without the pre-packed in warrenties and software. I got roughly the same set-up as you(-20gigs) for 700 dollars. However, if you want the warrenties and you need the computer quickly you'll just have to act now anyway.

I don't believe you can go wrong either way, but the 6000 seems more logical to me.

I'm using this laptop as desktop replacement for my 4 year in college, so I want it to be powerful enough to last me 4 years in college and yet portable enough if I need to bring it to library or something. I'm leaning toward the 6000D now.

I can get the 128MB video card, but then I have to give up the complete care warranty(I still get the 1 yr normal warranty) to keep it under my <$1000 budget, but it seems like it's worth it. I just need to be extra careful.
BTW, if I choose not to get the complete care right now, if I want to extend your warranty next year, can I add complete care?

And also how are these games under widescreen: wc3, diablo2, cs:s, sc. I heard they don't have widescreen option. I prefer to play it normal size with black bar than stretched. Can I do that?

So it looks like it's gonna be: Pentium M 1.6Ghz, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD, 128MB Radeon video for $900

Although I'm not 100% sure, you can play those games with black bars unstretched.

CS:S has a widescreen option for sure (I play all the time). Altogether that sounds like a very nice setup. I'm sure it will last as long as you need it, provided you take good care of it. The worst that happens is 3 years down the line the laptop needs a reformat and a reinstall, and then it's like new. Best of luck in college.

Well I have owned both. I had the 600m for a couple weeks and returned it because I got the 6000d for over $100 cheaper. The 600m probably won't play CS:S very well but will play the other games you listed perfectly. I ran UT2004 and EQ1 with no issues.

Personally I much pefer the 600m. It is so much smaller and lighter - I carry mine almost everywhere and you probablly will to so this is a factor. The base screen is also much better then the base screen on the 6000. If you get the 6000 get at least a step up.

I really like the media buttons on the 6000 since it spends almost all day at work playing dvd's, xvids or streaming shoutcast. It can pretty much handle any game you throw at it, but at low settings. BF2 is no issue at all.

So it boils down to: small and light vs better gaming performance.

I have an i8600 which is the same size as the 6000, and it is fine to carry to school and around school daily.

Regarding the choice between warranty and GPU, I would say compromise on the warranty and get the GPU. Get a shorter completecare warranty.

6000d is a Very solid laptop, i too have a little bit of wiggly-ness when LCD is down, but im thinking im gonna extend the rubber feet that cover the screws, to make sure it doesnt wiggle when i carry it, not that it matters, if its in a bag, its shut tight anyway
post #13 of 16
Get the 6000d
I'd say go for the 6000 if you have to buy right now. The 600m should be getting replaced in just a few months, so you'd be kind of disappointed if you bought a system, and a brand new one was out just 3-4 months later. I know I would.

The 6000D all the way, the 600M is tired and obselete, you might wanna consider a 9300 too
