CPU running at 98 degrees. :(

i just bought a z71v. overclocked my 1.6/400 MHz FSB pentium m using the dipswitch mod. i downloaded centrino hardware control which says it's running at 97-98 degrees. any ideas on why? it runs this hot even when it's mostly at idle. the fan is constantly running.

Did you apply any thermal paste?

This is definatley way too high for idle temps.

it appeared to have thermal paste on it. i will have to open it up and check it again. i may have to invest in some arctic silver.

could i have possibly damaged my cpu by running it that hot? i didn't realize how hot it was until after i downloaded chc and it showed the temps. it had been running like that for maybe a couple of hours.

Well I would definatley not use the laptop too much.
Forget about anything intesive (gaming, large file transfers, etc.).
I will let others help you in your troubleshooting.
I've heard the figure of 100 degrees celcius as a max for Pentium M's, so I guess you might damage it.

You should also tell us everything else you've checked from your configuration.

Are you running at 98 degrees fahrenheit or celcius? I find it incredibly hard to believe you're running at 98 degrees celcius unless you're in a hot room and all the exhaust ports on the computer are covered.

Your processor will shut down your computer before you damage it, so not to worry about that.

If you removed your heat sink, you probably disrupted the thermal pad or paste. Go back in and clean it, and apply Arctic Silver 5 or other quality paste. Intel seems to think theirs is the best, but there is some debate about that. I find Arctic Silver 5 to be the best. Be sure to follow the instructions on their website.

Check if its not 98 degrees fahrenheit...That would be normal

i'm pretty sure it's celsius. i think that is what chc displays by default. but i'm not positive and i'm afraid to turn my notebook back on until after i apply some as5. are there any other decent applications that will display temps, voltages, etc.?

i was able to hold the laptop on my lap. it was pretty hot but not unbearably so. i wonder if maybe i was getting a false reading.

i read that on intel's website last night so that makes me feel a little bit better about whether i damaged anything, but i probably did shorten the life of the cpu a little bit.

turn your computer on and touch the heatsink of the cpu. if its not burning then the temperature ratings are false.

i just opened my laptop and discovered there was a piece of paper taped to the heatsink where the cpu makes contact with it. i don't know how i missed that. wow. i'm no heat expert but i'm guessing that paper isn't a good substitute for thermal compound.
No it's not. You're supposed to peel off the paper before installing the heatsink.
Hopefully you haven't messed anything up before this discovery. But good job on finding out.
Save the paper and if call the company. Have them send you a new laptop just because.
Piece of paper?, I think I would go Apesh@* if I found something taped to my heatsink. Go back and get a new laptop buddy or at least an upgrade of some sort.

Lol
Who did you buy this from? was this assembled by your neighbor? This paper is suposed to be removed upon installation of the cpu. The paper is meant to keep the thermal paste from completely drying up while on the shelf. I would complain to your dealer and get a new cpu for that one. Ofcourse you may want to leave the overclocking part out.
Wait i dont think .gif got the cpu from his dealer. Most likely it was a self made job. I doubt any reputable dealer would forget something like that.

yes, i am the one who forgot to remove the tape. i just didn't see it there. i installed teh cpu myself.
D'oh.

Shame you can't send it back now. Though if the processor seems to be working fine now you shouldn't have any problems. As other people said, it will shut itself down if it gets too hot.

I've actually already seen a tech not take off a small piece of transparent paper on the included thermal paste.
Don't know how these guys (and girls) got their diplomas, but ok... Maybe out of a cereal box (jk)

Did we all miss this - he got a great CPU -- 1.6 O/C to 2.1 WITH PAPER between the heatsink and the CPU and it still ran -- WOW.

I would definitely demand at the very LEAST a new CPU and demand a 1.7 instead LOL
