Ace mega codeck pack + Divx 5.2 (media player classic)
It's free and playes almout everithing.

You can try V.L.C player to. Awsome one - Played those movies that the config above didn't, but not so user friendly interface.

no laptop yet but i like BSpalyer, good build-in subtitles features.

I use WinDVD and am quite happy with it.

PowerDVD Deluxe 6. Very nice player that offers hardware acceleration and other things. You can skip around the movie with little lag time and it has a clean interface. Best of all it can be found really cheap

Cheap is good....Free is better

Either Media Player Classic or ZoomPlayer with CCCP. The player isn't as important as the codec/filter pack for video, and the decoder is more important than the player for DVDs. In this regard CCCP is a very important component of the playback of most files you will encounter, and you simply can't go wrong with MPC or ZoomPlayer.

if you want a good subtitle control for your media player try Divx G400
