Hi…

First, thanks to Chuck witch I kind of copied his review layout :P

Well I was mostly looking for a Desktop replacement for a little bit and the Z71V seem the best bang for the buck … I have been using it for 3 days now and im loving it ! Here’s a bit on the spec…

ASUS Z71V
Pentium M 730 1.6GHz (533MHz FSB)
1GB OCZ PC4200 DDR2 SO-DIMM
Fujitsu SATA 60GH HD
TSST (Toshiba/Samsung Storage Tech) CDRW DL
Intel Pro/Wireless 2915 802.11a/g/b

Build and Design

Well been my first real laptop I wanted something that could handle some gaming , programming and web design. Since am back to school.
So am really please with the build quality, only found some minor flex in the screen and a little around the backspace key, but that’s it! ... Seem pretty solid overall.
As for design, well we all know it’s not the most eye catching thing in the world, but sill look better then many other laptops. And you could always do like Voodoo and paint them the color you want!

Screen

All that I could have read about it was “It’s Sparkling” .. well I can’t see the damn sparkle , my screen is bright and crisp , even in black solid color I can see it .
But I must say I love the screen and im glad it’s the mate finish, it’s already hard enough like this to work in the bright sun .. but it still doable

Sound

Well Sound quality is good enough for me .. Clear and loud enough. I was use to some old 10$ speaker on my desktop, so laptop sound way better: P

Keyboard and Touchpad

The Keyboard work fine, I only got 2 problem with it.. First is the FN key like many others. There should be a way to get the CTRL and FN switch .. arghhttt…
And the second problem , is it seem to be a bit small for me , but I’ll get around it , I always hit the CAPS LOCK instead of the A on this keyboard, but it’s coming now….

Undervoltings

I kind of read a lot about that but scared to try, but I decided to give it a go , been running strong for 4 days now..
6x. 0.700
8x. 0.828
10x. 0.988
12x. 1.180

Temperature and Noise

Those setting were acquire using Centrino Hardaware Control and SPEEDFAN for the GPU .
Wich I don’t know if they are accurate , but seem about right ..

CPU TEMP
AC ON –
Full Stress – 60
Minimum usage – 37-42
Regular usage – 44-50

GPU TEMP (OC 290/575)
Low stress – 64
High Stress -84

Battery

I haven’t really play with the laptop out of AC yet , only a couple time and it seem to hold up pretty good , I know with setting of PowerGear 4 at High Performance I was getting 3:45h battery life , that was playing around the net and installing some new stuff.

O.k. after a complete working shift with the laptop, it hold up 4h15 doing some words stuff and winamp.. Pretty good for me

Conclusion

I Don’t regret a thing, except may be that I should have gone with a DVD Burner instead of the CD Burner, but I still have one in the desktop!

Anyways
Peace!

Benchmark in the next post..

I know what you mean with the accidental "caps lock"ing, but I do that with desktop keyboards all the time, too! Congrats and enjoy!

How do you get GPU temp readings?
the is an auxiliary temperature reading that several people claim is the GPU sensor

Nice...

You could undervoltage it a bit more. It might go down to 1.02 or lower. I was able to get it to 1.004v on the T42 IBM P-M 1.6 I am using now. I'll try another step or two lower this weekend.
