Cooling Solutions for Sager 9880?

Thread Starter
I recently got a 9880 and have been nothing but impressed by Sager's great reputation staying true to my order.

This includes their choice of case and subsequent air flow. On full load the CPU is 60C and the HDD is 45C. Not bad for standard on a laptop. Still, I got this notebook because I'll be working it like a bitch. I'm on full load for up to 14 hours a day rendering in 3DS Max. So, while the temperatures are adequate, I'd still like to bring them down where I can.
Thus the reason for this post. I have little experience with cooling solutions for notebooks and am wondering if anyone had any suggestions outside of modding the existing hardware (I'd like to keep the warranty intact). I looked around at laptop trays and coolers but none of them are large enough for the beast that is Sager. The notebook would end up just sitting directly on the tray/cooler and actually lose airflow in comparison to it standing on its own four feet. I'd also seen an interesting PCMCIA fan that worked as in intake, pumping about 28 CPM into the slot and out several slits connected to the fan. Problem there, though, is that I'm not sure it would work on more modern notebooks, as today's PCMCIA slots don't give out constant power like the older ones do, leaving me to wonder if the fan is smart enough to say, "Hey, XP! I'm here! Use me!"
Anyways, was just wondering if anyone out there has found worthwhile cooling alternatives that don't void the warranty for their Sagers. I'm happy with what I got, but I'm always happy to improve.

I play hours of games and I strongly recommend Antec notebook cooler.

When you receive your sager 9880 are both your fans working or when it gets hot they start?

Did you have to upgrade your video card drivers? I’m wondering because I’m about to spend $3000 with sager the least they can do is upgrade bios and latest drivers

Thx

I'll be sure to check out the Antec (funny enough, I was just looking at their coolers when I saw your reply). I'm starting to find some coolers that are just large enough for the feet on the Sager, but still very interested in hearing what's worked for Sager users here in practice. I'm just finicky when it comes to functionality. The last thing I want to deal with is a cooler that only barely covers the feet of my notebook, leading to the occassional slip or tilt off of it.

The fans came set to turn on only when required.

Sager provided the latest drivers for the Quadro. Of course, I wasn't sure of that at the time I got it, so I went to Nvidia to d/l the latest ones. Boy was that a mistake! Nvidia didn't have any of the drivers for their Go series on their drivers' page! They had a driver for simply, 'Quadro,' and so I d/led that and tried it out, only to find that none of the Go Quadro drivers were provided. So I ended up going back to Sager's website and getting the driver for my Go 1400 back (at which point I realized from its release number that it was indeed the latest driver for the card). Whew!

Great information and thanks for such quick response

I've lowered the temp by a few degrees simply by putting an Ozarka bottle cap under each of the legs. At least it doesn't cost you anything.

I'm with you on that, Wanvig. I've had two DVD cases stacked under each rear foot for the past couple of hours. The temperature dropped 4 degrees and hasn't strayed. It's an easy, free way to bring the temp down a bit but I'd also like a solution that allows me to work from my lap. I've spent a good part of the evening searching through the forums and decided to take the passive route and order a Targus podium. Looks like it'll suit my needs.

This thread, Notebook Coolers, in the Alienware Area-51m forums might be helpful.

New bios

Did I miss anything, but did anyone apply the new bios update to the 9880 that allows you to "somewhat" control the fan speed by using Fcn F2?

Mine came with the update. Fn+F2 toggles fans always on/fans only when needed.

Whatever solution you find and employ; also consider raising the unit an additional 1/2 inch in front and a full inch in the rear to allow for a greater cooling area and "air cusion". Insure that whatever is employed to accomplish this does not inadvertently block any intake or exhaust port and restricts air flow more than is necessary. I use an ANTAC PC cooler (fans reversed to blow upward) and have placed little rubber feet (actually a bit bigger than little) on top of the cooler and then perch my 8790 on top of that. Normal operating temperatures for me are in the 37/38 (normal) and the 55/58 (intense) degree range. If I "kick in" the turbo fan mode and the fans on the cooler, these are reduced to 27/28 and 45/47 degree ranges. The temperature will vary depending on the ambient room temperature and the length of time since I last cleaned out the unit's exhaust system.

Modified iLap for Sager 9860 / 9880

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some pics of my modified iLap stand. I used a hole punch and made a template of the 9860 / 9880 on wax paper. The stand is still sturdy and is comfertable holding this beast when sitting on your lap or laying down gaming.

If you remove the front pad the viewing and typeing angle is perfect!

I did not make a hole for the sub since it probably would not make a difference. I wanted to leave the Rain Design logo so I made a small hole for the memory fan, which probably is enough air flow. I am thinking of cutting out a 1 to 1.5 inch rectangle where the GPU fan exhaust is. Let me know what you think!

laptop coolers (and any other cooling methods) for the 98x0 are a complete waste of money and unnecessary. the stock cooling design on these laptops is sufficient.

I just had a problem with fans gettin stuck....and i contacted sager...and they sent me the new h8-s8 driver's, with that fn+f2 turns ur fans on manualy.....thought i'd let u know...and they actually spin at full rpm....i mean like normally in the rear when all the fans are on...i can feel the fan blowin like 1- 1 1/2 inches away....when i use fn+f2 i can feel it away really far...its like twice as loud....but it seems to be alot better

This cooling solution works well for me.

Improves air flow with two large fans and by lifting the backend of the laptop up.

I have a stupid question to ask how do you view the temperature on the LCD?
With-out going threw the BIOS
That's the same exact cooler I have, 503!

Works great, doesn't it? And, not needing an external power supply is nice, and it's small enough to easily fit into any laptop bag.
BTW - what software you're using to check temperature ?
mobmeter checks the temperature of the CPU, HD, the frequency of the CPU and also gives the battery charging or discharging power,

I have mobmeter but, I was wondering if you guys know of any programs that check the temp of the gpu?
