The Dell 9X00 speakers w/woofer really are incredible for how tiny they are.
But for crying out loud...OF COURSE
it can't deliver the bass of larger speakers.(
) But laptop speakers have come a long way in many of the newer MultiMedia geared models, where it is a high priority. Mine are suprisingly far more than simply "tolerable
"; they're actually pleasing
It seems in this thread that the only ones comparing laptop speaker sound quality to that of larger external speakers are the people who are certain that all laptops speakers absolutely MUST suck!
My 9200, with the woofer volume turned down about 10%, really kicks ass as far as the clarity/volume ratio. I can take it to nearly full volume without significant distortion or rattle, depending on what I play (the rattling being more a combo of luck & laptop assembly quality & fitment, I realize) . And they are LOUD!
It's only in the last decade that the old fashioned paper cone speaker has begun to evolve to where composites have completey phased out the old crappy cones. I still believe there is far more work to be done, and I think that these tiny laptop speakers will get even better. I'm also certain that the key to good sound fron such tiny speakers is to divide it up between several different kinds of projectors (hence the subwoofer, but soon maybe even three different speakers per channel).
