Should I renew my norton anti virus? - Page 2

I agree, NAV is sometimes worse than the viruses that infect your machine.

I actually use NAV '02, but I will never uninstall it. At my next OS re-install, I may use something else.

NOD32 and Kaspersky are the two best personal antivirus programs. AVG and Avast aren't too bad for being free. Norton AntiVirus is crapware/bloatware. Symantec AntiVirus is what you want if you want a Norton-like product. Its the corporate edition of Norton AntiVirus and its not even writen by Norton but Symantec and the difference is night and day. I personally like Kaspersky because its detection rate is one of the highest.

So i just leave norton alone for now? not uninstalling it? Does it still hogs all the memory even though it's expired?
I'm pretty new to this.

I used Nortons AV for years and thought its "reliability" was worth the resource loss, which is highly substantial. Recently, my subscriptions expired and I deicded to go with Avast and Sygate, which I had used before on other machines, but not a laptop. WOW! Avast detectedseveral worms that Norton had never found and uses a mere fraction of the real-time resources. I am very pleased with my decision.. AVG is similalry good and free as well.

Agreed 100%. Add Firefox and Acronis True Image (or a ghost boot disk....) and you are in security heaven.

Unfortunately, some of the Norton bloatware is next to impossible to remove. "Protected recycle bin?" WTF?? Would you hire a security guard to protect your dumpster?

epp_b wasn't kidding when he said you may need to reinstall the OS to be rid of it.

the protected recycle bin is for stupid/retarted/cripped users that dont know WTF they are deleting, it gives you 6 chances to recover your data,

1 you have to hit del to remove it
2 you have to agree to delete it
3 you have to manually click empy recycle bin
4 you have to agree AGAIN to remove it
5 you have to manually click purge norton protected files
6 you have to agree to purge the files

NOW the file is deleted, now how many idiots can STILL accidentally delete important files after 6 stupid repetative steps? i have NEVER deleted my file accidentaly and i have my recycle bin turned off, i only have 2 steps to remove files permantly.

I dont understand, all these avast, avg offer a trial version, which expires after 30 days. Is this the free scanner that everyone's talking about?

Well, it can still be restored off of the hard drive for a limited amount of time.

You're still going to uninstall it after 90% of the replies have told you not to? Registry cleaning apps just don't work...at least not the same as a reinstallation of your OS.

I would recommend this: disable Norton AntiVirus, don't uninstall it. It's better to have unused files and registry keys for a disabled program than for an uninstalled program.

Open NAV and disable auto-protect through it's options panel. Since this certainly won't disable everything in one shot, you will need to manually disable any related startup applications via the statup folder (Start > Programs > Startup) and through MSCONFIG (Start > Run > type "msconfig" (sans quotes) > click the "Startup" tab).

If you need any help figuring out what you should and shouldn't disable, feel free to ask here or go to ProcessLibrary.com, an excellent resource for identifying what origin, purpose, description and more about most any given process.

Also remove the NAV icon(s) from your desktop.

You're looking at the professional version(s).
