why does everyone say that zone alarm hogs resources, right now its only using 10mb of ram. I have 2gb so this isnt an issue, how is sygate for protection and resources?

Actually you don't need any third party firewalls. Update XP (I take that's what most people are using) to SP2 and use the built-in firewall. It has program control, blocks incoming, and it masks ports well (I did a port 135 test and it stealthed it), that's all you really need. It uses close to zippo resources too. I've used it on college networks, home networks, even in the airport and absolutely no one got in

Not unless you share them. Also, don't install any programs that allow them access to your computer.

Agreed.... except I use the free version, along with a hardware NAT/firewall.

No, as Windows firewall does not monitor/notify of outgoing traffic--only incoming. That's the main reason I use Zone Alarm's free version.

dont know what the hell is going on with all this za bashing...i use the pro version and it works flawlessly. its blocked many viruses and access attempts and also finds/deletes a good amount of spyware.

when checking the resources, zlclient.exe is only using 9mb...no complaints there either...

Perhaps, but there are several admittedly large holes in the stability... VSMON especially will shoot to outrageously high memory usage (100mb+) due to memory leaks. Like I said, its not going to cripple the computer, but why should I have to worry about shutting down and restarting it everytime it does this? Also, even when it wasn't suffering a leak, VSMON would consistantly be around 30mb or so. To put it in perspective, Tiny uses 3mb.

But yeah, ZA is far from being a bad program, it just isn't nearly as stable as it could and should be. That's just my preference, though... like I said, its still a fantastic firewall.

EDIT: This is not its "normal" state when VSMON is using hundreds of megabytes of RAM... its happened to what seems to be a decent amount of people, so its obviously something with the programming.

redmumba how much is tiny firewall and how are its reviews?
A little history.
Once upon a time, there was a powerful little firewall called Tiny Personal Firewall. For sheer power, you couldn't do much better. However, it was...shall we say, difficult to configure? Actually, some people likened it to a masochist's dream.
Then some folks decided that they wanted to build an easier-to-use version of Tiny PF, and voila! Kerio Personal Firewall was born! Since then (a few years back), the two codebases have diverged.
Hmm... this thread is making me paranoid. I might try kerio if it's that good. Windows firewall monitors outgoing by blocking programs, so it's been good for me. Originally I had McAfee firewall. Although it was fantastic it was a resource hog (35MB+ constantly) and it was $25 a year. Hmm... what's the kerio site again?
Kerio Personal firewall and ZoneAlarm are the two best personal software firewalls. Even if you have a hardware firewall on your system you still want a software firewall installed because a hardware firewall only prevents data coming in and doesn't monitor whats going out from your system. You also want that added layer of protection if anything gets into the network.

Well, to be fair though, most firewalls (just the firewall, not the whole package) are the same, and unless you're preparing to go up against an attack directed at you and you alone, even the worst firewall would probably be alright. Anyways, Tiny is no longer difficult to configure, its fully automated... basically, if you can use ZA, you can use Kerio, Tiny, whatever. I just like Tiny because of its, well... Tiny...ness...

If you want something light, take a look at Netveda (fee for home users) http://www.netveda.com/consumer/safetynet.htm . I'm still using ZA free v. 5.5 (v.6.0 has caused me too many issues). If you're willing to pay, I agree that Outpost Pro is a great choice. BTW, ZA free is consuming only just under 8MB memory. KPF 4.2 used about the same on my notebook, but it failed to pass a couple firewall tests. I'm sticking w/ ZA 5.5 unless I decide I want to pay for Outpost.

Not true--it only monitors incoming traffic. Were you thinking of Zone Alarm?

I wouldn't trust Windows firewall to protect you from anything. I mean it is a Microsoft product were talking about here and it naturally has security holes.
