With slower sales in chips to be used in desktops, focus is shifting to anything that has the potential to make big sales in notebooks as that is what appears to be driving sales and profits today.
AMD has announced their mobile dual core processor to be out in the first half of 2006:

AMD hopes to have 20% of the market within three years. Rather than focus on branding themselves such as Intel has with Centrino, they are focusing on keeping it with the OEMs with quality chips for the right price.
Also, Intel is expected to announce their roadmap today which is expected to be focused around a little less power, less heat, and chips with multiple computing engines... aka: chips focused more on notebook use. This roadmap is expected to have the biggest changes since 2000 according to a

It's clear where the future is. While desktops aren't expected to just die, notebooks will likely continue to grow at an extreme rate for years to come. The company that rides this growth the best will without a doubt be ahead.
