The Laptop Tweaking Guide - Page 3

K6, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the guide. Between you and odious I had no troubles whatsoever when I reformatted my XPS this past weekend. It couldn't have been a more seamless operation, and it was all because of you and him. Thanks ever so much. Reputation points coming your way.

i cannot reformat! It says that the disk may be damaged!! I think when i tried to format in DOS, after I typed Y when it asked me, it asked me if i wanted to do smtg. with the hard drive that i chose yes to, i think that was the problem...Any thoughts??
anything would be much appreciated!

here we go again on one of the major flaws of every microsoft filesystem...even old alternative fs like ext2 have a more intelligent filemanager, that prevents them from getting fragmented...hope winFS will finally adress this issue...

erexkiss, I posted in your thread. Glad it helped you JR, that really makes me feel good that I did something to help the community. I want to update the guide again with the suggested additions along with a wireless config section, but I need to get some sleep and time first .

And unfortunately I can only tweak what is given to me, nubber

I got a quick question. Are people download the Dell QuickSet application? I'm formating my computer and just wondering if most people use this tool or not.

I dont because I have no need for it, most of the stuff it does I do manually through windows and CHC does my voltage control . Quickset just seems to be a simpler user interface for many options that can be found within Windows XP itself.

These are the files that bootvis has moved. Presumably, these are the boot files that Bootvis has moved to the beginning of the second platter of the your HDD (please correct me if I'm wrong), but they are obviously isolated for a reason. I've used bootvis on XP for awhile and I can definitely see the benefits of it.
I like to use TuneXP instead of Bootvis.

http://www.driverheaven.net/dforce/default.php

It's a freeware utility created/hosted by Driverheaven.

It performs a function similar to bootvis as well as many other tweaks such as file system, memory management, etc.

Thanks for the feedback guys

I'll check out TuneXP this winter vacation, I'm hoping to get alot of my work done then. Bootvis is kind of iffy though. It doesn't really work that well wiht SP2, as I myself have found along with other reports. How's it working for other people? I'm thinking of pulling it out of the guide.

Thanks guys! Big update coming within the next two-three weeks (as soon as finals are done on the 20th); I think I'll call it v1.5, oooo!

Anyway, feel free to post on anything that was confusing or something that you would like to know about more and I'll try to amend/expand the guide.

Not to steal your shine, Mr. K6 but I think everyone wanting to tweak their laptop should probably go to the following link:

Very helpful IMO. But great work btw, Mr. K6!
