Is this thing really that heavy and hot?

I am very close to buyin a 51-M because price wise it comes out to about the same as a dell xps gen2 and i get raid 0 w the alienware. I am worried though about the weight, heat, and battery life of this thing tho. I want to be able to play games on my lap while i am laying in bed sometimes and it seems with this thing it just isnt possible. The dell is a bit slower but it seems to much lighter and cooler from what I hear. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I dont want to carry a ton around and I don't want to fry my legs either.

With the choices now for your criteria, get the Dell. Damn that hurt...

I would love to get an alienware because well for one...I know dells tech support. I am a computer technician and I have to call dell once in awhile to order things for my customers and its never a pleasant experience. I hear the screen is alot nicer on the alienware but the thing just seems too heavy and bulky =/. I dunno...I will be ordering i the next few days so it gives me some time to keep checking things out but like you said, based on my criteria its lookin like the dell is more for me.

yeah its heavy and hot so dont plan on sitting in bed with it while playing games unless you make some sort of t.v. tray....thing... ohhhh but it kicks ass other than that.

Good luck eliteonexp on your quest. Both machines are killer.

I'm sure you will shop around and find the right fit. If you have a month or two, I hear a new mid size AW notebook may come out for the Holidaze.

definitely dont sit in your bed and play games, you'll block the wents and kill the laptop. i like the 7700, but it does get hot on the front left side. aw or the xps2 is a good choice. i'd go alienware, my family has had 2, no probs, excellent service, great systems. good luck on your choice.

I don't have the AW notebook, but do have an XPS 2. At a little less than 9lbs, it is heavy but manageable. I've used it almost exclusively on my lap - just put a book under it that doesn't block the vents, and it is reasonably comfortable. Doesn't get too hot (but my Guildwars addiction is probably not a sufficient test). It's transportable, but I sure wouldn't want to carry it around every day.

DON't buy an XPS 2 unless you use the coupons - at 40% off, mine was about $2,000.

Note - I'm still partial to AW (have an AW desktop), but the XPS 2 works great until someone comes out with a good 15" gaming notebook.

battery life is approx 1 hour. the power brick is about 1lb and gets HOT. the system also gets hot, like around 140F (60C) near the video card on the front left side.

many people suggest getting a notebook cooler to help with the heat and/or some sort of laptray to hold your system if you are going to be "gaming" on your lap (is that what you kids call it these days?)

7700 is very great for desktop replacement, but the video card is very hot after 15 mins of running the laptop, ake if u only surf and listen to music.

Personnally, i'm happy witht he 7700 but wait for a new one that is cooler, and maybe the 7800 go will be release for the 7700 with a better cooler, else, i'll go to another one.

BTW, i have the ddr3 version, not the ultra, but the ultra fan seems to be more efficient.

The Dell is not slower than the Alienware 7700, in fact it can be faster on different applications and games.

^nice troll.

how can you even say that without any proof? provide a link to your third party, independant comparison study, or STFU.

oh, and your processor says "M" on it, mine doesn't.

lol, yeah I play with 7700 while in my bed, although i don't have it directly sitting on the covers though. I have it sitting on top of a laptop cooler. that way the vents don't get covered and stuff. Other than that it works just fine. I haven't had any issues with portability with it, I lug it everywhere on a daily basis...heck I'm using it right now at work. So its not that bad, if anything you will get your daily workout out of it.

ALso, its not actually proven that the xps2 is faster than the 7700 considering that processor in the xps2 is an "M" procesor it can't be any faster than 3.0 ghz 7700. heh. IMO I would say that the 7700 is faster the xps2, have you seen the parts that go into a xps2. They don't even offer ddr2, let alone 6800 ultra...or even ati x800.

Apparently you believed AW's false advertising on their website.

XPS 2 does have DDR2 Ram and the 6800 Ultra.

Rought Estimate: P M x 1.6 = P 4 CPU

2.13 x 1.6 = 3.3

If you look at 3DMark05 scores across the board, you will find that both the 7700 w/ the Ultra and the XPS 2 score around 5200. The XPS 2 has all the performance of the 7700, but runs cooler and is more power efficient when on the battery. This is important when looking for a portable solution.

The P 4 is a glorified p.o.s.. Your avatar points the finger at the real "fanboy".

If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Oh my my my, I never did think i'd see the Second Pwning in my lifetime. And, since everyone on this forum seems to enjoy spewing garbage without some hard numbers, lessee what the interwebs can provide... oh, a site that provides comparisons between hardware?!! Say it isn't so! But it is:

www.tomshardware.com

_hell
P.S.
Pentium Mobile fanboys:
BOOOOOOOM! HEADSHOT!

Furthermore, I don't think you're corn that rode the log of p4 to the depths of the ceramic throne... You're more peanuty.

lol i hate comparing systems like this, the only real way to sit to systems side by side. Everybody has their own damned opinion about their system. who cares...Mine has alien eyes on the back that glow blue..!!!!

does the dell's have that? I think not.... PWNED!!!!
