Ubuntu and kubuntu only for the latest machines

So ubuntu is only going to work on the latest and greatest machine. it seems every post on here has some user with a 64bit rig or the latest intel machine and its working. if its not working then everyone jumps in and helps. seems those with outdated laptops need not look for help. i dont get this.. so unless you have two thousand or four thousand dollar rig ubuntu and kubuntu is not for you. people who are fed up with using ms programs and the os it's self, and choose to use this progam i guess they should understand that if their machine is old dont look for help. everyone for themself figure it out on your own then post how you did it ..

HI.

I guess I am here to support, yet deny your claim.

SUPPORT:
My Uniwill 258KA0 works like clockwork with Ubuntu, its a newer model (last year) 64bit rig with some good specs (for last year). However my older Thinkpad T23 has issues. the live cd works great, but it installs very craptasticly. So yes, it seems newer machines work better.

REBUTAL:
Although my 258KA0 is a "newer" machine, it did not run me anywhere near over $2k. I paid $1570 for mine last year, today you can get the same spec for $1300 shipped! Furthermore, one of my friends has a custom built (over 2 years ago) desktop featuring P4 w/HT 3.0, Gigabyte mobo, 1gb ram, nvidia 5700 128mb, 200gb WD hdd. point is, it is not THE LATEST parts, and the rig worked just fine with ubuntu, even Wifi (prism 2) and everything.

In the end:
I really don't feel that ubuntu is for new rigs only. Although there is probably a good logical reason for why newer rigs get better support than older models.

Then they need to let it be known that this os is not for older machines....
My rig will run ubuntu fine...it is 3 years old...p4 2.4ghz 533MHz fsb, rambus ram, etc. I dunno where the idea was had that you had to have the latest rig to run it. The above is my desktop, but my sisters 4 year old duron 900MHz, 386MB ram laptop will run the live cd fine...it is a little slow, but most stuff is on her laptop.

Good for you still has not change my mind on the fact that this os does not work right out the box as so many have said... theres guides here for segers and help for all the others with newer machines end of story if you dont have new machine or some what new machine you will not get this os we an working. and to find help is not going happen. simple problems like the ones i have can get internet access modem not found wifi dot working net work card not setup. i mean come on i read post about how people run the disk answer few questions, and they are posting from said laptops running this os yet i cant get simple answers to get the problems fixed..

Have you looked anywhere else for help? I mean I love NBF but this is not the only place where there are people willing to help you. Maybe try a ubuntu forum specifically....try this: Free Ubuntu support

Bob, I found this:

"

People I know have had excellent results with IBM and Compaq

I use linux on an el cheapo Acer Travelmate 290 series

You'll need to install a few things extra - not just the distribution provided stuff

1. Centrino drivers for linux, by intel - http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net

2. Laptop Mode and Cpufreqd (google will find those)

3. A new 2.6.x (currently 2.6.12 but for how long i dont know) patched with the cko (con kolivas overloaded) patches that provide some useful stuff like bluetooth etc

You need to tweak things around a lot I'm afraid but the end result is worth it. Even better if you buy a laptop that has fairly standard components and no "hidden extras"

http://www.linux-laptop.net/ has detailed notes on this for you."

Sothe question is how did he or she install this stuff with no net access i mean unless you have to machines this seems imposable.. thanks for the info though
post #16 of 41
Good question...I dunno...it does seem like you would need two computers..I guess unless you had a friend or something with a net connection and a cd burner. Does the info. I gave you though look like it will help you? I know that the centrino fix thing is supposed to help the wifi connection. Are you able to download it?

i should be able to get the fix i guess i will have to figure this all out.. seems the more i read the more i feel this os was built with 2004 or newer machines in mind..
Yeah, I know that ubuntu is a newer distribution. Could you use another distribution...I've heard that gentoo and suse are both good. I mean I am not trying to steer you away from ubuntu, but you might try another distribution and see if it is any better. I hope my information helps you and sorry you had trouble getting help.
