So, i ve been using ubuntu on my 505x (512mbram and 40gb 4200rpm), ran crapy before i recompilled the kernel. i trued 2.6.10 with ac12 patch, compiled agressively, ran better. You should play with hdparm. TuneUP hdparm, recompile the kernel....good luck
