Inspiron 8500 Problem - Display

My inspiron 8500 was running a game on the battery until the battery ran out and the computer lost power. Now, when I power up the notebook (on AC) the screen is black and periodically half of the screen will turn blue or red and flash. The processor is booting up like normal and working to do something, but i can't see what is going on. Any idea what could have happened?

I have had problems like this w/ my 8500. If you call tech support, I doubt they'll be much help.

Nils,

Try connecting the laptop to an external monitor - perhaps your desktop monitor if you still have one to make sure the video card is working. Once you've removed the video card as the culprit, the most reasonable explaination I could find was here:

I know you're probably not having any trouble with the standby trigger that pushes down when you shut the LCD, but the computer does have to go into standby mode when you work under battery power and the batts get low, so this could be a symptom of that same issue. Sounds like the various power connections to the LCD and the way they're seated under the blue decorative snap-on are a little iffy on this model.

Don't forget to update your video drivers if you haven't done so. The Dell tech guy's gonna make it a point of telling you to do that first. You let him know a member from NBF told you first.

Dunno if this is of any help but my 8500 also does this at times.

Each time, I have given a gentle sideways whack to the LCD panel, and the problem then has gone away.
