Which of these two (crap) computers is better?

Okay. So as i go back to college, i have to leave a computer in my room for my sister to use for email / papers / research / IM etc. (basic needs)

I can setup one of two computers... both have their ups and downs, but in the long run arent that great.

OPTION 1: old micron system
Pentium II 450 mhz
384 mb PC100 ram (3x 128)
10gb hd
Some random 16mb AGP video card

OPTION 2: old dell system
Pentium III 667 mhz
256 mb PC100 ram (only 2 slots, so 2x 128)
10gb hd
Integrated video (no AGP slot, and i dont have a PCI vid card)

I figure with these specs i should just run Win2k... which computer is better? Is the extra RAM (and dedicated video) worth the decrease in speed?

I think option 1 is. 384MB RAM

If it were up to me, I would prefer option 1 also.

Could you do a mix of both ? Taking the vid, the cpu and all the ram that you can and putting it in single machine (if compatible of course) ?
If you are not sure, do benchmarks and see what is the higher

no i cant... i only have a little time, and i dont feel like switching out the CPU... but in any case i bet they arent compatible because one is P2 and one is P3

also, as for the video card- the dell has no AGP slot and i ahve no PCI cards

as for the ram... they both take the same ram, but the slower computer has 3 slots. i can either have 3x128 in the slower, or 2x128 in the faster

everyone- thanks for the help... i'm just gonna keep the older computer... i will upgrade its CD-rom drive tho

you should be able to easily swap the cpus, as they both should use the Slot 1 interface.

The 667 could be a socket 370. Even if it isn't, the older MB in the PII machine may not support the proper FSB/multiplier combination to run a 667. ThePII 450 is a 4.5x100FSB if I remember correctly. It is possible the board won't do 133MHZx5 for the PIII.

Trying to remember way back to the P2 days and I'm pretty much positive you can't mix the two motherboards/CPU's. I'd go with the P3 though. That processor was much better than the P2, plus the bus speed was faster. Video shouldn't matter since you're obviously not going to be playing HL2 on that system...

you could also just replace the ram in the P3 machine with 2x256mb RAM. You can get 256mb PC100 RAM for about $15 each.
