Looking for feedback from 8104 owners

Hi guys,

Im considering purchasing this model. At this point I'd value any feedback from 8104 owners; some questions on my mind:

With the 2Ghz processor, is this laptop get noisy?
How do you like the native resolution of the screen? Is text too small?
Any problems that prospective buyers should know about?
Would you buy it again? If not, reasonable alternatives?

Cheers!

I love it. I'd buy it again in an instant dude. I bought this back in February and it's still top of the line, and that says something. The fan comes on during AC power, but is very quiet anyway. On battery power, the fan hardly comes on at all. The native resolution is fantastic as well, but I do have great eyesight, haha. The laptop gets a bit warm, but not moreso than any other laptop I've ever tried. Go ahead and buy, it's a fantastic laptop.

I agree with the previous post. If you buy this notebook, you won't be disappointed. I got it for $1855 shipped, and it was worth every penny (all 185,500 of them).

To specifically answer your questions; no, the notebook doesn't get noisy unless under heavy gaming use, and even then I can't really hear it myself, just fans.

I don't find the text to be too small when using it with native resolution, but even if you did, you could change it to a smaller res. I don't notice any decline in clearness with it set smaller.

Only problem you might need to keep in mind is that you might become addicted to using it (as I am).

I would definitely buy this notebook again. If I could have made myself quit gaming and video editing, I would have gotten something similar, but with a lesser graphics card to lower the price some. But since I can't give up gaming, this is the machine I prefer. The Ferrari seems great as well, for alternatives, but I personally think they're not as good looking as the 8100's.

Thats fantastic guys, thanks for the feedback.

Im definetly leaning towards getting this notebook, its got everything i want. In fact the only thing stopping me from going and getting it right now is the 2650$ Canadian price tag.

Hey Jarpmann,

Is your 1803 100gb HD a 5200 RPM?

Snoozer, I have the 8103 as well and love it. prolly got it about 4 months ago or so and have had zero issues with it. Play doom 3, BF2, CS:Source etc all fine. No heat issues, quiet fan and a very nice display. I actually prefer the non-glossy and cope with the native res fine. It's a keeper. Only complaint is common, the sound from the built in speakers is sub-par for the rest of the machine. Not very loud even at max vol but with headphones its fine. I agree with the previous post, need to upgrade it to the gig of ram. BTW, my 8103 has the 5200rpm 100g hd. Got it at newegg.com

Well, the fan of 1804 is a bit noisy, but I love this laptop. It´s the best.

Had mine a week now and the laptop is great. Generally - it doesn't get too hot, fan comes on occasionally but to me is not intrusive, keyboard angle fine, trackpad gets warm but is not a problem. Wireless LAN works a peach. Screen very good, resolution easy to live with although I have come across a couple of websites that 'don't fit' well for viewing. Have had two issues - 1/ BSOD when putting in a MSPro (SD card works fine, tho) and 2/ the front mic jack does not seem to be working. Called Acer UK Support and they were happy to arrange a pick up the 8104 to swap out the audio jacks. No argument.

Moving from a AJP500D (3.2HT/1GBRAM/60GB-7200) and as far as I can tell so far, this is just as fast - I got 2GB RAM as I use vooice recognition software. Such a pleasure to not have the *constant* noisy fan*s* of the P4, let alone the 15-25 min max battery life. This Acer does 3.5-4.5 hours, depending on what I'm doing.

Overall, very pleased and would definitely buy again.

Snoozer, You would not be dissapointed in this fantastic machine. I'm doing quite a bit of video work and the 8104 is smooth and fast and I only have 1 GB of memory so I can only imagine how well it will perform when I add an extra gig. The native resolution is small for these old eyes but it is so crystal clear that it is easy to read everything and there is so much real estate on the screen that sometimes I forget that it's not a 17" screen. I have not had any heat issues, it is quiet and very dependable. I purchased the 8104 in February for $2300.00 and have not regretted it at all. With the recent price drop it seems like a real bargain. I would buy this beauty again in a heartbeat. If you get it you will love it. Get an Audigy ZS2 and the sound will blow you away.
