SATA will not recognize second drive

I have recently bought another 60 GB SATA drive which is identical to the one that came in my machine... but it fails to recognize it... I am not running in raid mode and I have already used both the origional and and RMA sata cable... also I know that the other drive works for a fact because when plugged into the SATA 1 it detects the drive... am I really just missing something?.. are SATA drives not just supposed to show up?..

You need to 1) insure that the jumper for cable select/master/slave is set correctly. Then the drive must be partitioned, and finally it must be formatted before it will work.

Right click My Computer ==> Select Manage ==> Select Disk Managment (Its under Storage) ==> Look for the new drive, right click on it and estableish the partition and format.

I was under the impression that SATA did away with jumpers...
And the drive does not appear at the loading bios screen for the SATA controller...

Well I talked to the pctorque support and they seem to think that my secondary SATA controller is damaged... so they say that I need to RMA it... this is now the second time in a month taht I will have to RMA the machine, and this time it will cost me over $200 to RMA the machine because I am leaving for a year long trip to Germany that I specifically bought this laptop for over 3 months ago... oh well... glad I got the $500 off...

If anyone has some crazy idea of what it could be that would be user fixable... please do tell me...
