EVDO is about to get mainstreamed. I just spotted this on the Dell site alongside the Sprint EDGE network they've been offering. This is big news and could really create demand for more coverage and new towers.

For those of you who don't know, EVDO is mobile broadband and works nationwide with broadband speeds in major cities. DL averages 600-1000kb and about 115 up.

LOL, pretty soon I won't be the only guy checking email at stoplights anymore.

Richard, if you dont mind, how much does that service cost?

80.00 for unlimited usage.

Sprint doesn't offer EDGE. EDGE is GSM only. Sprints EVDO should be coming out this year, right now they only are offering 1xRTT. Then I can upgrade my iDEN phone to something much faster.

Thats too expensive, over twice the amount I pay for broadband and its slow. Hopefully the city offers free wifi access in another year or 2.

It's all relative, I travel a bit and the cost of wifi is between 10-15 a day at hotels so I use Verizon instead, I've dropped my phone line use this at home, work and on the road. So what seems expensive to you is quite reasonable to me.

How is EVDO coverage? And have you heard about that company that will sell you a "tweaked" Verizon card that can get 2mb per second?

I get about 1m down here in Dallas and that's all over town. I've used it in DC, NJ and CA with varying degrees of success. NJ was as fast as Dallas, DC was about half and Palo Alto isn't EVDO it's the old 1x net at about 144kb but every time I crawl off a plane, there it is.

Your link is BS. EVDO is a T1 into the tower, thats 1.5m max. When someone tells you they're going to get you 2m-3m out of 1.5m spigot, it's time to grab your wallet and start backing towards the door.

That sounds ok for unlimited use, and its wide coverage would make it ideal!! Better than the wireless broadband here in Aus that use a proprietry network, instead of CDMA or something. The only thing we have close to that is the GPRS PCMCIA cards, and they are nowhere near that fast. Defniately not broadband.

Really? I have noticed that free wifi is starting to be standard in many hotels and even motels. I had wifi while staying at an el cheapo Super8 in Fort Wayne, IN. One of the first things I ask when making reservations is if there is free wifi. I hope there is free wifi when I go to jamaica this year.

If the price of Verizon (or competitor's) price drops to $9.99 or a bundle with my DSL service, I might consider it. But free wifi is starting to become a commodity at cafes/restaurants (e.g. buy food/drink get free wifi) in my city. All of the public libraries have it free too.

LOL, well, the hotels I stay in charge for it. I'm sure if you search around you can get free wifi but that isn't my main consideration in selecting a hotel. I'm not sure what your point is in beating this dead horse but let me reiterate, I couldn't be more pleased with this service. It would be great if we could all have it for 10 bucks a month but to tell you the truth, I would pay even more than the 80 for the freedom it gives me. Chocolate and vanilla, old sock.

My dads company has two wireless broadband cards called iBurst. They work great, and quite fast, that is if you can gete signal. They work great in the east coast metro areas, but anywhere else you would be lucky to get 1% signal. They simply don't have the coverage like CDMA and GSM (and therefore GPRS) have.

This doesnt sound worth it as expensive as it sounds...cant mash it into my college student budget any which way (cant justify it either!)

However, if it does become as 'widespread' as some people claim, will I be able to install it in my i9300 later?

Yeah, its just PCMCIA card. Just slid it in, and install the drivers!

Has anybody tried this? Apparently, if you have a Verizon Motorola E815 phone, you can use it as your wireless broadband modem to leech into EV-DO if you have the Verizon VCAST service ($15 a month option). Just press ##DIALUP really fast on the E815 to enable DUN(Dial Up Networking) then use Bluetooth to wirelessly connect the E815 to your notebook which hopefully has Bluetooth too. Create a Dial Up connection using the E815, use #777 as the dial up number, use any username and password, then you're all set with a wireless "broadband" connection with typical speeds of 500 to 900kbps but still not exactly cable or DSL speeds.

Voice and data are separate plans and accessing data through your phone will result in a per minute charge of about .69. One guy got a 1500 bill for one month. Obviously, he was abusing the system and I've also heard of guy doing it for a couple of minutes with out charges.

The verizon SW allows you to convert your dial up account to wireless, it's wierd, you create a dialer and the wireless PC card becomes your modem and off your go. Problem is, it's chargeable. I tried it out and four minutes usage appeared on my bill. My point is, I wouldn't take the risk of tapping in to the data system hoping not to get caught, coud be very expensive.

I have heard that the price of the EVDO service with Verizon may be reduced to 60 dollars next week.

Not really, it's a separate system for data (internet) and the physical wireless modem is a PCMCIA card. Hopefully, this Dell deal will push for an internal mini card likw wifi. You can see the PC card on the lower left...
