strange problem - can't boot

Thread Starter
my asus m6ne went into hibernation, and now will no longer boot. when i press the power button, the fan kicks on, and i think i hear the hdd spinning...this goes for 5 or 6 seconds, and then stops.

the blue led around the power button never comes on during this; there is no screen activity, and i get the same result every time.

i have not yet had a chance to see what happens if i try to start with the xp cd in the drive, but i'm not too hopeful.

as near as i can figure, i either have a hdd problem, a loose cable somewhere (perhaps from the ps), or something is just downright fried.

any suggestions, or experiences like this?

much obliged

Hey Zem, hope things are goin' ok out there in the boondocks. Sorry to hear about the Asus packing in on ya. Wish I could help. When was the last time you cleaned out the heatsink? That's a pretty common problem, but I don't think it'd result in the symptoms you're experiencing. It does sound like it could be a HDD problem, so first try putting the XP cd in and if that doesn't work, try to get your hands on a spare HDD. G'luck with it.

Zem, you might have more luck if you post this in the Asus Support section.

I have a Sager NP4780 Notebook with a new HDD
When the power button is pressed,
both green LED Power Indicators come on green.
The computer does not boot up and there is nothing on the screen.
The green LED Status Indicator for "System in activity" comes on briefly and then goes off
After waiting several minutes without any further action, I hold down the power button for 4 seconds turn off the computer, and then re-try the procedure with no success.
Any suggestions?

have you tried
remove the battery
unplug the power
press the power button
wait 10 seconds
plug in the power
press the power button

This sounds like a general problem with laptops, not just Asus. See this thread

Oh, almost forgot. When I contacted Sager with this problem I was told to send it back in as soon as I'd finished describing the problem. No troubleshooting at all, just send it in for repair. Not sure what the problem is, but my guess is BIOS or a problem caused by excessive heat build-up that may have caused some damage (although I cleaned my fans and heatsink every other week and they were rarely very dirty.) Having said that, this is the only issue I've had with my Sager 9860 since it arrived last December.
