DVD-RW Stopped Working

Hi there,

Just now my DVD-RW was viewing a DVD then began skipping. I stopped the player then re-started and it played fine. Then I changed cds to put a game in and the DVD-Rom was slow and the mouse started getting jittery. I rebooted and now the DVD-RW is gone from My Computer and is not detected when i search for new hardware.

I purchased the 9860 in november of last year and am wondering what I should do to fix the situation.

Well, I emailed PCTorque and Sager. I don't expect to hear from Sager as I sent them a support request eons ago about something else and still haven't heard from them.

I was actually going to purchase the 3881 from them but in light of this and the realistic fact that I'm screwed since this is my main machine. If I have to send it back I would almost rather pay to get it fixed locally. The opportunity cost is that problematic.

Also, after reading all these threads about parts gone awry which i had never read before I'm sort of frightened.

Is there any way to get it fixed myself? Can I get a new drive sent or something? Is it the drive or the actual optical drive port?

I can't be the first one to have this happen to me...

Does anyone know of any models of DVD-RWs that I can buy locally that will fit in the 9860? Or do I have to purchase it from Sager?

Almost all of the slimline (laptop) DVD units will fit.
