Aspire 5021 heating->slowing down..?..

Hello. I'm a happy new aspire owner, alltho I have experienced some kind of slowing down -behaviour when playing games (with heavy graphics ). Is it, that when h/w get's hot enough, computer slows down to reduce the heat production? This would explain this behaviour, but it sucks if I get to play only 15minutes(or even less!) before game will slow down (not fps's drop, but game speed does)

Other thing related to this issue is playing after coming back from stand-by-mode. This is especially when this problem occurs. In fact, this is how it first happaned. This happens with battery and with AC power.

My notebook's bottom-side is quite hot, hot, tho I have not used laptop's before to have a comparision how hot it should/would be.

Gonna d/l some s/w to get some degrees from h/w (hehe some abbreviations) to see how hot things get here.

Any clues appreciated generously.

When you figure out what parts are getting hot, then we have something to work with.

Change your power profile in Control Options to "Always On". Make sure your are plugged into AC for optimal performance.

Your graphical settings may be set too high in the Game. Try lowering the resolutions as well as other settings. Certain frames/parts of the games stress the hardware more than others depending on what is being processed

Heat will not make it run slower, it would reboot your PC, Turn Off, Or Crash the Game.

Ahem..

What would "always on" help in this case, that would just make computer not to go to stand-by-mode etc.. shouldn't affect gameplaying..(?)

What's your point with "too high settings"; too high becouse of then laptop get's too hot --- or --- too high for hardware to render smoothly?

It's not the latter thing, there IS enough performance.

So, simply Q is: Is there this function in these laptops that they slow down to prevent overheating? And could it be this case? Sound crappy if I have to use lower quality settings just becouse heating and not becouse slow computer..! It would be acceptable if this was the case after playing an hour or so, but after just some 10minutes::;; SUCKS a bit.!

So, hardware is capable to play games smoothly; but effect occurs that game speed is decreased to half or more (and I don't mean framerate drops, it still runs smoothly, but GAME SPEED drops (like time slows down)).

anyway

I'm researching this behaviour, Quake 3 Arena with best AA&AF settings won't cause this, at least not in ten minutes, some I got after a longer session. But Q3 is old game, newer seem to do this quite quick. How stupid it is to build a computer that won't be able to use it's power!! Let's see how this clears out. Anyone elses experiments with aspire 5021?

Ok, tried this now after a long period of light load (surfing web only etc.). Launched game Painkiller (quite boring game seems to be..) And about 7 minutes I got it nicely, but then, a slowdown...

And now, after 5minutes cool-down-break I got 5minutes of smooth play. Sound isn't affected at all. Hot part is pretty much center of laptop, and also the left side and the front side (touchpad part). Bottom side is hot, upper side just very warm. It makes me wonder, why isn't the cooling-air coming out from the left side of the laptop not nearly as hot as it was some days ago, even that I'm now playing heavy games.. cooling-problem..?.. but how,why..

It can't be normal that you are able to play only 5minutes at a time?!?!

Also, I wasn't able to find a program to show me hardware temperatures, one program showed only hdd, but cpu temp was n/a.

Please try the steps I suggested, there not much more I can do.

Power Profiles throttle the Processor Speed.

Hardware is not able to render at the settings you have I believe. Just try setting the resolution really low and dropping the setting lowers to try to isolate the problem

I can run GTA:SA at 1280X1024, it looks like it is running silky smooth. Then I drop down to 1024X768 and it is much more responsive and runs silky smooth. It seems like the Game Speed has risen.
