look at my home-made XPS 2 lappie cooler!!!

After modding my X800XL, modding that mod again and finally watercooling it all, I thought it was time for another project.

So here it is! Care to give me your thoughts on my new lappie cooler?

It started with two sheets of perspex and a cat ...

A pile of fans I had lying about...

And some spacers (and nuts and bolts and stuff)...

Measured the hotspots...

Measuring all holes...

Drilled rather large holes...

Mounted fans and connected them for elec testing...

Finished side view (fuzzy cam ON)...

Finished top view...

At first I hooked it up to the USB port, but at 5v the fans don't deliver enough airflow so I mounted an external power supply with standard adapter plug. I also made a connector for that plug that allows me to hook it up to the USB port anyway in case of simple home usage and some cooling/spacing from bed or couch is needed. Little rubber feet will be added as soon as I get a chance because more space is needed for the air to flow.

The fans are set to blow for now, but that may be changed later if I decide that sucking is better (my wife thinks so )

Tadaa!! so, whaddya guys think? Be gentle

oh.. you all wanna know about temp drops I guess... well, I couldn't exactly measure any real big difference, but the knowledge that my nuts are no longer being baked is at least some comfort to my wife

(this oughtta get me some rep points )

EDIT:
Perspex 23 euro's
Spacers'n stuff 5 euro's
Fan's (if I hadn't lying them around) 21 euro's
Power supply (if not from garbage) around 5 euro's
Misc. connectors 5 more euro's

So it wasn't cheap...

And now for the final FINAL shot of my pet project:

Smoothed edges, rounded corners, little rubber feet for spacing with the lappie and little
cloth feet on the bottom for comfort and non scrath stability.
Power plug switchable from 5v USB to 220v external All done!

That is sweet. Definately better than anything I could come up with. Good job.

Okido, they'll have to be a size smaller to fit on the board but that should be just fine since they should blow IN TO the grate and not on the outside.

So.. going to mod it

p.s. I was also contemplating removing some of that grate anyway, it's just that I fear voiding the warranty.
You think Dell would mind if I take a mini rotating disc sawing thingy (how's that called in English anyway?) and remove like.. I dunno.. half?

Nice work BTW. Do you ship to the US? hehe

Hehe, looks like A British blue, they're nice.
Mine's a Russian blue, just like my wife, exept she's not blue (more pinkish).

Well, perhaps we can end the suck v blow controversy once and for all in this thread.

Hehe, I'm up for it...

I can imagine sucking having the advantage of sucking away hot air from the intakes instead of blowing it to them.

Anybody?

Well, I have a small room and I find that in the summer it gets cooler if I have the 1 fan in my 1 window blowing OUT the hot air, but I dunno if there is that much of a difference...

BTW, nice mod tijgert

Oh wow.That is sweeeet
Maybe I'll come up with soemthing like that.....How much did you spend for all?

Necessity is the mother of invention. Nice rig and excellent effort. The cat is pretty cool too.

Temp tests before and after would be a nice finale to it.

I'd say if the exhaust fans on the laptop are on the under side rig it so there are fans on them sucking and the other fans blowing. The blowing fans coupled with the sucking fans would create kind of an air blanket unerneath the laptop and should help a lot with cooling.

Do you have a small nuclear power plant in your backyard to power that beast?
Intresting how loud is that beast?

It's not very loud at all, which is another reason why I wanna add some more fans
It all runs fine on a 12v 400mA power supply.

If it is still to hot on your nuts after all that, perhaps you could turn it unside down.

Or just add another fan to the bottom

Well... I'm contemplating mounting a peltier unit between the perspex sheets and arrange some sort of airflow to pass it and get cooled down before being led into the inlets... how's that for ingenuity eh? Well, its only an idea so far.

Nice mod! It would have been nice to seen the panels made with aluminum
