Sorry to bump an oldthread, but OMG! This is the best idea evar! Gonna hook up my printer and do this myself! Awesome!

Although, I think I'm gonna mount a power supply inside the unit where I can hook the laptop to the cooling unit, and plug the cooling unit in. Instead of taking up two plugins.

did we ever find out if it worked?

You mean the peltier version? Well, the assembly is ready, has been for a while now, I'm just waiting on time to mod the power supply but other stuff keeps getting in the way.

Talk is cheap, rep points is what counts

Anyway, it works marvels on keeping the bottom of the lappy nice and cool.

Should the Fans Blow Air INTO or AWAY from the Laptop??

So.. going to mod it

p.s. I was also contemplating removing some of that grate anyway, it's just that I fear voiding the warranty.
You think Dell would mind if I take a mini rotating disc sawing thingy (how's that called in English anyway?) and remove like.. I dunno.. half?
Should the fans blow air into or away from the Lappies vents?

Into the bottom if possible, the bottom ones are intake vents.
The top intake vents are too tiny for a fan to have effect.
The side vents mainly just for show and to house the leds behind.

Yeah you need to sell this.

Nice looking cooler, edit the first post to show the temp differences, that would be interesting. I just bought a cheap Pacific Breeze cooler from newegg, mostly got it to prop the laptop up and keep my lap from burnin' up... Works well, I get 3 degreese less on the CPU and 7 on the GPU durring idle.

edit: that cat is flyin! awesome!

Hehe, you mean sell it to you right ?

This lappy was a one off project. My Peltier cooling version never really got past 1st gear... it's still waiting...

(peltiers and all stuck together with cooling sinks and everything.. but no inspiration anymore)

I'll take the wifey ... You guys can have the fans.

(Fans look nice btw... but all this talk about sucking and blowing is making me forget about the fans... thinking more about the "wifey")

OP sounds like a lucky man

No, this is:

very nice work man, people that do this kind of work are totaly cool. I agree with others, having extra two wholes and repositioning the fans to blow in where there the intakes are would help a great deal.

I also have in works the ultimate home project that will fit all XPS chasis, 9200, 9300 and e1705... it's a laptop cooler/stand I'm builing, nothing will come close to it.... preliminary results are drop of 12 degrees on a graphics card under load 6800 ultra (soon to be replaced with 7800gtx) all under 22db (near silent) it will cost me about $40 to buld it to perfection.

is that really your wife? no way man, quit pulling our leg ))) and just in case you're serious

Indeed. I calculated that the intake surface of the fan itself is actually smaller than the total surface of the open slots in the grate. Theoretically there should be no resistance in airflow. However the air would have to make some turns to get into the fan which does cause some resistance.

Making the extra fans actually blow into the grate would negate part or all of the resistance. Either way, raising the lappy is a must anyway because the little rubber feet of the lappy don't do it enough. You can test this by simply putting a pencil underneath them and raising it some more. You'll see a relatively large temperature drop because it won't have to suck the air from the sides.

How about you post some pics of your project?

And yes, she is
