Has anyone had one or both of these drives? I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone who has had the 5k100. How do the two compare as far as performance and noise? Any comments about either drive?

I have the Seagate Momentus 100gig 5400rpm. It is a very nice drive. I have it installed via an adapter in the DVD tray. It is quiet and it is plenty fast, but I have not bechmarked it since, I use it as a secondary drive. Another, forum member has two of them installed in an XPS2. He likes them. I may swap it with my 60gig 7200rpm. I don't think I will notice a difference, because it does not seem any faster than my old 80gig 5400rpm that was in my old laptop.

No contest the seagate rocks hitachi's socks when it comes to 5400 rpm drives. having a larger platter size only helps. Price wise the hitachi is pretty inexpensive for what your getting performance wise.

They have different platter sizes? What size platters do they both have? I'm pretty sure they both have two platters of relatively the same size but i havn't looked.

The 5k100 isn't in that review. Only the 5k80 which is a different drive. 5k100 doesn't mean its the 100GB model. 5k100 is a different lineup just like the 7k250 is on the desktop line. There are 40GB, 60GB and so on Hitachi 5k100 drives.

We have a mobile hard drive guide that was just started over at HardForum and they Hitachi 5k100 is on the top of the list for best performance in the 5400rpm drives.
