I guess I'll keep from posting such things from now on.
I appreciate your insight about my machine, and the re-assurance I got a decent deal very much! After finding out I had the 64MB card, instead of the 128MB - I was bummed your post let me know I wans't that bad off! I mean the guy I bought it from was probably almost 50 years old, and didn't seem to know what he had in the computer, so maybe he did it on purpose, maybe not. Thanks for your post very much!

I'm going to look into the Geek Squad, see how much they charge to install one of these cards. The price is $340 - I wonder how much if any they drop off for installation?

My resolution is 1680 x 1050 - I'm at work but I'm 99% sure thats what it is... is this decent/average?

Thanks again! I've learned a ton about laptops in this thread!

You can check you res in Display Properties (right click the desktop, click properties then settings).

1680x1050 is da bomb

yep, its definately 1680 x 1050 - only thing is... whenever I try to drop below that resolution - my laptop gets pissed! Haha, if I try to play Counter-Strike in anything less than 1650 x 1080 - she gets upset, and reverts back to that resolution! Its all good, everything looks better at that resolution anyway!

Are you playing CS (original) or CS:source?? My 1920x1280 scales beautifully to 1280x800 in CS source haven't tried original CS though. I run it with 4xAA and 8xAF. Here is a screen Shot....not that thats representative but it really does look this good.

Do you have the latest ATI drivers or the lastest Omega's?

I'm playing CS orignal, not Source...

I haven't updated any drivers or anything, just what was already on the computer. It does have an ATI driver, because I have all the ATI tabs under settings and everything, not sure if its the newest though?

I'm unsure what 4XAA, and 8XAF mean...?

Reason i haven't downloaded any updated drivers - I'm unsure which to go with? I hear talks about these Omega drivers, then ATI drivers, and then to get them from Dell's site, not ATI, etc etc - whats the easiest way to get the most from your card?

Thanks a bunch for the response, I appreciate it very much!

I loved CS orig but CS:Source has won me over big time. It was the impedous for getting my XPS. Here is a great article on AA (anti aliasing) and AF (anisotropic filtering). Basically this is what your paying for when buying the the 9800. The 9700 can run the same games but can't pull out all the great smooth endged graphics (as well as some other stuff with new shading/bump mapping techniques too)

About the drivers get the new ATI Catalyst, I suggest the ones without the Control Center but try whichever, and use DHMOD to modify the driver to install on a laptop - Link to DHMOD - the omega ones are great too, speed wise, but I still have an omega "Advanced 3D" tab kicking around after de-installing and run their "Driver Cleaner". So I'm not certain about their ease of removal.

Is 1680 x 1050 the lower of the resolutions they offer?
Yeah, there's a 1900x1200 also. But I can't stand text being that small..
No, the lowest is WXGA (1280x800). I think WSXGA+ (1680x1050) is the sweet spot

Yep. I feel no need for them.
