windows doesnt start anymore

this is definitely not my week...first my enclosure I bought hasn't worked and the tech support is crap, now this: I updated WinXP to service pack 1a, everything worked, then downloaded service pack 2 ( around 270MB) and installed it. after the reboot everything was very laggy, finally nothing but the taskmanager responded. I rebooted, same situation. I shut off the notebook by pressing the Off-Button for several seconds. But when trying to start it, there comes a blue screen on for a split second and it turns off and on again. I now have the choice to start it in safemode, with commandprompt, networking, loading the last working setup or just booting up windows as normal, but nothing works, after a few seconds a blue screen pops up and the computer shuts itselfs off. I'm speechless...what did I do wrong? and can I do anything to get windows running again without reinstalling xp ?

Try to boot from the cd and repair windows... I dont know what else you could do. Good luck, I hope you dont have to format.

One option is to call Microsoft and have them send you an XP SP2 slipstreamed install disk (they'll ask for your current install key before they send it though)

If you can log into safe mode (restart and continously tap f8), then perhaps you can uninstall sp2? Do a search on sp2 install problems... you will find alot. Regarding the slowness, I remember booting into safe mode to do a defrag as the installation had heavily fragmented my drive.

might be of some help.. good luck!

Sp2 install a lot of hotfixes that can disturb other software.
Try to boot from CD and reinstall your windows.
SP2 you need only for interet and if you have a good firewll you don't even need it.

thx for the advice. but it get even better. I can't find my windows cd, so I'm thinking of ordering one from toshiba. Do you guys think that I could try fixing windows with just any windows xp cd? or does it have to be that specific one? it would be a lot easier for me to just borough one of my friends' cds and try it.

^ Any same version (Home, Pro or MCE--SP1 or SP2) XP cd, except perhaps OEM, will work.

Try going into safe mode, then start disabling all third party services and programs.

Then boot up and see if it works. If not, go and see if you can get updated drivers for all the hardware you have.

If the above does work, then start enabling services bit by bit until you hit the snag - that probably indicates that the program isn't SP2 compatible.

Also, it would be useful to know if you have a NX-capable CPU - it could be DEP kicking in and messing up some existing utilities.

even safemode doesn't work anymore. I don't know what NX-capable is and how I can find out. can you explain?
What CPU do you have?

its a P4 2.8 GHz

Need to be a bit more specific than that - do you know which model? Like the new Intel processor numbering scheme?

Or are we talking about the old Northwood chips?

dude if you can wait i'll be glad to help you fix you top without reinstalling. but i just got don't mid-terms after working a 60 hour week. i haven't slept in a week without drugs mind and fixing this will take some time. however i need to sleep now must sleep now or mite bite someones head clean off. i hear my bed calling. first turn off auto reboot on fail it's another one of those options that you didn't mention and write down the stop message. it's no doubt a driver issue. delete the driver and windows will come up. you may need to get a bart pe disk and bootup on that to delete the driver. or if you have access to usenet down winternals admin pak, don't buy it you can get it for free on usenet. plus it's like 500 or something awfull. must go to sleep try that and call me in the morning.

you must find out what the stop message states.

its a toshiba satellite a25-s279, but I don't know what specific processor it is, other than it's an P4 @ 2.8GHz.

so, I actually found the recovery CD, inserted it and changed the boot order. My only option is now that I reinstall Windows and everything will be deleted. There is some data on the PC that I would like to keep, but its no life or death, and I'd prefer if I could fix this without reinstalling. how do I get to the screen where I can choose just to fix windows?

Here is what the blue screen says:

"Stop: c0000218 Registry File Failiure
The Registry cannot load the hive (file)
\SystemRoot\System21\config\system
or its log or alternate
it is corrupted, absent or not writable

begingin dump of physical memory ..."etc

and when I try to go into safemode the notebook
stops when it comes to this line:
System32\drivers\AliAGP.sys

maybe this is of some help, thx-1138.

thx for everyones advice!

your screwed, sorry. once the reg is gone it's time to reinstall. unless you have a recent system state saved somewhere but then again i've never had any luck restoring a system with that data

I created a system restore point, does that help?
If you can find a plain Windows XP CD (preferably one with SP2 on it, shouldn't matter if it is OEM or not), try an upgrade install using it.

Boot off the CD, and then it should detect the existing copy of Windows. At that point, it will ask if you want to do an upgrade. Say yes, and see if that restores the system to a point where you can do a safe backup, and then wipe and re-install.

I have XP Home Edition on it, does it matter if it is a XP Pro with SP2?
The version of Windows should match what you have on the laptop already.

Sorry, I should have specified that earlier.

the problem with the reg being gone makes for many issues. say you did have winternals admin pak and there cd boot os. it still needs parts of the os to boot mainly the reg. if it does see a somewhat valid os there it won't give you anything to co boot. they have another verision of a restore point program that works with windows restore points so that may be your only chance. soory had to take a power nap

winternals adminpak is an excellent set of tools and every sys admin or novice computer user should steal or owe there own copy. verision 5 has a realy cool crash analysis program that takes memory dumps analyzes them and then tells you wants wrong with your computer and gives you some suggestion as to what to do. it's very expensive but it works. i've brought many systems back from the brink of utter reinstall by using it.

it's an awesome tool. plus you can use it to hack any local system. it has a program called lock pick that lets you chage the admin password instantly. plus many other really cool tools. regedit, remote restore ..etc

the same people that bring you the systernals web site.

http://www.systernals.com

if you still what to try and have a standard non-scsi non-raid system I will create a boot iso for you to brun. If you to have either scsi or anytype of raid setup I will need the drivers to install with it.

Let me know by giving me your e-mail address and I will create an ftp account on my system for you to download the iso.

THX-1138

ps it will work with any version of win > = 2k. though there are no restore points in win2k so that particula feature is disabled

i'm awake now and will be for a little while

pps if you clicked on the link there was a typo eariler for winternals it's corrected now
