reformatting Dell laptop...HELP QUICK

Thread Starter
ok so im reformatting my HD, and ive created 3 different partitions, 12gb for XP and swap, 30GB for programs, and the rest for files and docs. Now im at the setup page with the 3 different partitions with unknown format. I've formatted the 12gb partition but then it restarts to install windows on it. Do i ahve to format NTFS on the other partitions as well? How do i do this?

The easiest way is to just do it through windows once it's done installing.

Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Computer Management

Click "Disk Management" and right click for format menu

you don't have to format those partitions if you don't want to. that's the whole point of partitions, so you can save your docs somewhere else and if your xp partition gets hosed, you've got all your docs saved elsewhere. this doesn't protect you if the whole drive fails, just if you get a virus...etc..

but, all you need to do is format the partition you want to install the OS on.

Well at some point he's going to have to format the other partitions to store any data on it.

Just select all of the partitions individually and choose to convert to NTFS for each one.

^^^ I've never done that before, though, but that sounds like that's it.
