is an upgrade worth it

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
all right - im on the 423 pin P4 at 1.4Ghz with RDRAM not DDR...(dell dimension 8100 anyone?)

currently i have an old geforce3 Ti200 heh

im probably gonna get an i9300 or whatever is out in about a year since i'll be going to college

though i wouldnt mind a cheap vid card upgrade - though with that processor i donno how much of a bottleneck any upgrade would be or if it even would be worth it at all

thoughts?

meh, it's most likely not worth your while to upgrade the gpu, anything that you'd want to do with it would also require an upgrade to the processor and ram...

so my advice would be to save the money for your new computer, and if you really want to spend it, buy one of the consoles (ps2, xbox) as they're getting to be very cheap ($150)...

How much RAM does the system have? That's something you definately don't want to upgrade with RDRAM prices where they are. If your RAM is below 512MB, it will be your biggest bottleneck probably if wanting to do any kind of gaming. If you have a decent amount of RAM already, go ahead and chunk an 6600GT or something along those lines in. The processor will hold you back some, but 1.4GHz is plenty of CPU power to game with. I literally gave two RDRAM systems (1 a 1.4 and the other a 1.6)) with the older CPU socket away in the past 6 months because they both had only 128MB of RAM and I could build an entire new system with 512MB of RAM for less than it would cost to put 512MB in those.

play with it. i had an old P3 (dell l866r) that i upgraded:
(price paid @ time of upgrade, done over the course of a year)
CPU: 866mhz ----> 1ghz ($70)
RAM: 128mb -----> 512mb ($120)
video: intel i810 ----> nvidia fx5700 128mb ($70)
hdd: 18gb 5400rpm ----> 40gb 7200rpm ($60)

these upgrades put some wind back in the rig and its still being used today every day.
