Wow, that is a nice room.
I don't know though, I always avoided the dorms like the plague. For a similar price overall you can rent an apartment and make your own food; a healthier alternative...plus it never hurts to learn how to cook. If you want to impress a woman, forget about the laptop, make her a 5 course meal from scratch.
When I was an undergrad, I had a 2 bedroom apartment with all utilities included (except for high speed access, I had to buy that) for $580 CAD. Add on food, and I was still way lower than what the university charged for a shared dorm room. I still advise students to get out of the dorms ASAP. I will admit they’re great from a social aspect, but they are not conducive to a good study habit. With all the security nightmares involved in dorms, a private apartment has another big advantage.
It really all comes down to personal preference, and it will vary depending on you institution. I know that the University of Western Ontario has a dorm that actually made it onto the top ten lest for best placed to get laid. It was the type of place where there were six floors, and a party on each floor regardless of the time. Can you imagine trying to do some serious studying there? On the other end I know of another university in southern Ontario that actually has a silent floor, no talking, no music (headphones are OK). Given the money you spend, I found living off campus to be much more comfortable.
