Hey all,

I want to buy a pc laptop like a fast alienware so i can record with lots and lots of plugins. I would like to use a really good interface like the motu traveler. However this interface like many other quality intefaces is bus powered and all. If i connect it to a 4 pin firewire will i be wasting my money?

In a word... Yep.

VERY few laptops I have been able to find with the 6 pin Firewire 400 or 9 Pin Firewire 800 needed for this unfortunatly. The Powerbook is the only one I can think of right off hand.

Now what you CAN look at doing is pick up a seperate PCMCIA/Cardbus firewire card with the correct ports on it to provide bus power. I am looking at doing that myself, but unfortunatly I dont know how much power that cardbus can supply and wether it will effect the amount supplied by the firewire port/if it will supply enough for what I need etc.

But I would definitly look into it for PC laptops, it seems that NOONE has gotten the idea that the power over firewire might be a good idea. Incredibly handy to have, especially for interfaces like the Traveller or Firewire 410(What I am using) etc.

phishfly-

Well it seems that idea I presented above wont work out quite right, the closest youll get is using a wall wort on the card(In the case of Adaptec for example) to supply the power to the firewire bus, but apparently PCMCIA cant supply enough power for a good firewire card to be able to give power over the interface.

Dang it learn fast PC ODMs. I want power over my firewire connections. Mac seems the only one capable of doing this thus far.
