Can this be achieved with X41 or T43 ?

Thread Starter
Hi all, since I´ve read so many interesting threads here I hope you can help me as well!

I currently use one PC with two 19" Monitors, 1 Laptop with 15.4" WideScreen, and one very old 13.3" Laptop. The PC certainly runs great (Intel HT 580, 2 GB Ram) but it´s bulky, hot and loud. The new 15.4" Widescreen laptop is fast, has a fantastic screen but gets hot, fan is loud and it´s pretty heavy and battery last only 2 hours. The old 13.3" Laptop is just too old to handle XPPro and even with a brand new battery I get only 2.5 hours.

What I do with my machines: Emails, Word, Excel aka office stuff, some minor webdesign and Photoshop things and trading the futures and forex markets 5+ hours a day - therefor I need the two 19" screens.

My dream: ONE SINGLE laptop which batteries give me 5+ hours, very light for travelling and easy to handle when writing emails in bed, AND the ability to handle 2 external monitors.

Is all this possible? I am really sick about d/l drivers and updates for 3 machines, synchronize Outlook and all my data, missing everyday a certain data set or email because of sync problems etc.

I heard about dockingstations which can handle PCI cards - what about a Matrox Dualhead ... I heard about lappys which last 8+ hours using an extended battery plus a battery for a multibay plus one for the dockingstation... I heard about laptops way below 5 lbs ... but I have not found the one which fits all.

I do not play games and the screen size of the laptop wouldn´t be much important if I can feed 2 external monitors. It must be solid even I will go after a 3 year all inclusive warranty since the machine will be used every day for many hours.

Thanks for any advise
Tom

Hi Tom,

Sorry, to put that in an IBM Thinkpad thread, but check the DELL Inspiron 9300,

Has its own 17" display and can support TWO external displays. Power enough to do your office apps a long time. And DELL offers in my opinion a very good price - performance ratio.

An IBM X41 can most likely do this with a docking station of some sort....I don't use one with mine so I am not certain what features they offer. I can tell you tho that the x41 is an awesome machine...around 3lbs with the extended battery which can give you up to 5 hours on the go i think...I just now sat down with mine and it is about 4:12 min on a full charge...that is with everything cranked way up. To get some specific recommendations relative to using a X41 for your scenerio I would post over at www.thinkpads.com as they are very knowledgeble about all things thinkpad and are also a very helpful user base. I moved from a Dell 6000D to this X41 btw...and while I loved the screen on the 6000D (15.4" WSXGA) it was just too big for my tastes for travel etc....let alone the 9300...although many here don't mind lugging it around at all. One note, however, is that the X41 has only a 12" screen and uses 1.8" 4200 rpm HD which can make it quite slow by comparison for anything hd intesive...for what I do...general office apps, web etc. it doesn't bother me at all....and it runs my external monitor perfectly. Again, tho my target was maximum portability when away from my desk and decent power at my desk with an external setup....and the X41 did that for me.

It can't. There are two ports, but only one at a time will work.

I am guessing that with those large monitors and trading stuff you might LIKE TO HAVE a high RESOLUTION laptop when you travel right?

1600x1200
1920x1200
atleast 1450x1050 (SXGA+)

So depending on how high resolution you want you can go to:
Inspiron 6000
IBM T42s/43s
or other brands with high res lappies.
