XPS-2 Place of fabrication? Delay from Ireland?

Hello everybody,

I've registerd today from Deurne, The Netherlands and subscribed to this forum since I've ordered my first XPS-2 last week (08-23-2005).
It will be fabricated in Ireland and then shipped (flown??) to Holland.
At least I hope so because the deliverydate is suspended already two times.
Initial the delivery was planned on 09-02-2005. By Saturday it was delayed by 11 days and today an extra delay of 7 days was added. The last deliverydate is set for 09-20-2005.
Dell says there's nothing they could do about it. Complaining that I've already payed € 3260.60 (which is about USD 4000.00 I guess) but will not receive the ordered product doesn't help this far.
Where are the products for the American market produced?
Do you encounter the same problems as I do?

Extra information:

It is still in phase 2 Pre-Production.
For a moment phase 3 Production was reached on Saturday, but after 90 minutes it was put back in Pre-Production. Very strange I think.

My computer was made in Malaysia and shipped directly to me in the U.S. I think everyone here has encountered something strange on the dell website watching their new computer get built and the phases getting updated :-)

My 9300 destined for South Africa is also being put together in Ireland, and it's been on pre-production since it was ordered on 24th August

Where can I see an expected delivery date? I don't see one on my Order Status page. I was just told by the sales person when I ordered that delivery is 10 - 14 days after order, but I know the factory in Ireland doesn't give a h00t what he told me, they're going to take as long as they like.

The majoriy of orders placed in Europe are assembled in Limerick, Ireland..

Regarding the price, how the heck have you made it so high? Did you max out everything?

Make sure you complain loads and get some money off or an extended warranty for all the delays.. Really exadurate the difficulties you have had and that they are causing you..

I've ordered this XPS-2 config:
'Standard features / basic config':
Pentium M 770 2.13GHz
17" WUXGA TrueLife 1900x1200)
130W AC adapter
80Whr 9 cell Li-Ion primary battery
NL Modem Cable and adaptor
Internal 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet NIC
Intel ProWireless 2200 802.11b/g Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card
Dell A425 spekerset
QUERTY international keyboard
Microsoft Works 7.0 and some other software included

Extra's added:
XP Pro SP2 including Media (+€ 50.00)
Upgrade to 2Y NBD on-site (+€ 220.00)
1024MB 533MHz DDR II SDRAM 2x512 (+€ 140.00)
80GB 7K2 IDE Hard Drive (+€ 170.00)
Fixed internal 8x DVD+/-RW (+€ 60.00)
Dell TrueMobile 350 Bluetooth Modul (+€ 29.00)
Inspiron XPS Gen 2 Nylon Backpack (+€ 39.00)
APC Basic Surge Protector - 5 outlet (+€ 19.00)
Logitech Di Novo 2.0 Media desktop (+€ 159.00)
Kensington Twin saver lock (+€ 4.00)

Basicconfig € 1850.00
Extra's € 890.00
Total € 2740.00
VAT+19% € 520.60
Grandtotal € 3260.60

Complaining doesn't seem to concern Dell's people I've spoken to:
'We order our components just in time and for that reason it is
possible that for a period we can be out of stock'.
In my opinion demanding prepaying this amount or even any amount
isn't fair since they can not keep the 'promise' of the deliverydate
as told you ordering the computer. Postponing the delivery by over
11 days - at this moment even 13 and it has been 18 days - and
telling you Dell should be able to deliver at 09/02/2005 is way out
of line even if the general terms contain a 30-days period.

So at this stage the process is still locked in phase 2. During the
day the deliverydate changed several times to 09/14/2005,
to 09/15/2005, back to the 14th and back again to the 15th and
so on. Yet it is stuck at the 15th.

Met vriendelijke groeten, (Dutch, meaning: Kind regards)

YAY, on its way (I hope!)

Order status 5: "Your order has been dispatched as of 2005/08/30 21:14" It jumped straight from Pre-Production to Dispatched (not that I'm complaining)

"Your order is currently with the carrier and a detailed status on your delivery should be available shortly."

There's even an electronic copy of the packing slip... so hopefully its not just a mistake with the website status! maybe I'll even have it by Friday

@ radicool:

Lucky you. I hope you will receive it soon.
Enjoy it while you can: right now still having some sparetime and in a few days having hot leggs caused by the XPS-2!!

Im from Ireland, and I haggled with the reps to cut down on the price, but they dont really give anydiscounts. All I could get was to cut down on the RAM, they almost matched the price I would get it for on a website. But that was it.

It cost about the same as yours.

Dell Ireland are very mean with handing out discounts - the only discount I've ever seen in 3 years is one for 5% and free delivery.
The DELL South Africa website offers zero discounts. I ordered online, then phoned them and told them I wanted a 2.26 GHz processor because they don't list it as an option. I also asked for a discount

So they upgraded the processor from 2.13 to 2.26, and dropped the price by about $100

I composed it on the internet, then phoned to Dell Netherlands.
I couldn't get any discount at first sight. Very difficult.
After some time the salesman I spoke to said he had space to offre 3% (!!!) discount based on the price of the XPS-2 not including the extra's.
Instead of the discount I asked for the Kensington Lock.
Also they wouldn't charge me for delivery.

I got charged for delivery

You're lucky though, they don't even offer the XPS2 here, so I had to go with a 9300.

I searched for my order number on the Expeditors website, and it came up with my shipment It's in transit. I have a friend who works for Expeditors in South Africa, so I emailed her to ask if it would get here by Friday... hold thumbs!

Is your order still in pre-production dallas?

Unfortunately it still is.
Today it shuffled between delivery at the 15th, the 14th, the 15th and right now it will be the 13th of Septembre. (N.B. orderdate 08/23/2005, expected to be delivered originally 09/02/2005)
I don't know how it's possible that this goes up and down by the hour.
I can imagine that the producingprocess can go faster than expected, but phase 2 = phase 2 and if the components are not present it can not be produced at all. Still the deliverydate changes each hour.
Anyone an idea how that can be caused?

Update:

My XPS-2 is still in pre-production.
The last two days nothing changed: expected delivery 09/13/2005.
I mailed to Dell complaining again and 'Yes, they regret the delay, ...blablabla, but there's nothing more we can do for you. Shipping is scheduled 09/08/2005 and it is in production.'
They didn't answer my question to explain the exact fact why it is delayed.

Shippingdate 09/08/2005 means as far as I can see nothing else than to add 3-5 days untill delivery. So that will be 08/13/2005. And that again means 'No news from the western front...'

Orderstatus tells me it is still in pre-production (phase 2). Dell wrote me it is IN production (phase 3). I don't believe that because I don't think it will take them 5 days to built, test and pack it before even shipping. That would cost them such a huge amount of money if every single system would take so long. Besides that they also told me once before the average order-to-delivery-time takes about 5 days. Those things are not compatible with my experiences.

Sorry to hear about the delays. I don't understand the Dell website either, since mine just skipped everything between pre-production and shipping. It's arriving in South Africa tomorrow on BA flight 055

Hopefully I'll have it by Tuesday morning. My 2GB Kingston is also ready for collection at the local PC supplier, and my Kensington replicators/docking stations are scheduled to arrive by 7 September... so i'm all set to go...

Only problem is, I'm so busy with work, I'm not going to get a chance to play with it much

Hope all of your systems jump into shipping soon too!
