So I broke my heaphone jack :(

Wow, only been on here for 2 days and already broke something

I use my laptop on my lap (duh!). The pressure of my leg pushing up on the headphone plug created a short where I would only hear sound out of the right headphone (similar to this). I thought it was a short in the headphone plug, so I probly helped the problem by sharply bending the cord. After a month or so of that, I realized it was the jack itself. Then I got the idea of getting a small object to go in there (in my case a piece of wood) so I wouldn't have to force it anymore.

Well, today it went back to just the right headphone, so I wiggled the jack and it gave way. Now my jack moves almost freely.

Which leads to my next problem: I have to have the headphones plugged in and just in the right spot to be able to hear the regular speakers! Wiggling it more, it will go into headphone mode and play mono, pushing down on it (a LOT harder than before) gets stereo.

I wouldn't have a problem sending it in to Dell for repair, BUT... I'm about 6,000 miles away.

Well, I was hoping the jack wasn't soldered on the mboard. Guess it sucks to be me:

So now, I'm looking at picking up these, which bypass my problem by using the USB port. Seem to be highly rated.

Any other ideas?

Sorry to hear that. The USB option is a good solution though.

How do you like the XPS otherwise?

The DSP-500's are the BEST usb headset available IMHO.

I have them, got them on refurb from newegg about 2 years ago, with it's built-in soundcard, and the drivers from Plantronics, I can honestly say that these sound better than some of those "5.1" headsets on the market.

Definitely get the DSP 500's!!!

DSP-500's work great for me.

I've got 2 pairs of the DSP 500 headphones and their great! I use them for gaming and also VOIP with my wife since I've been away for 2 months (home in 2 weeks!!!). Both the sounds and the boom-mic are very nice and comfortable. Sorry to hear about the broken hardware though.

dsp-500s are terrible. I tried them vs my audigy zs notebook with really crappy audio .90s and the audio .90s won. I would suggest sennheisser pc150s or pc160s. Get a better soundcard with them. Actually an even better headset is the Medusa 5.1 headphones. cheaper and better than the sennheisers but once again it would help to have a nice 5.1 soundcard.

Where you at in Kuwait? Actually... don't answer that. Go find your local Aviation Unit(Chinook, or Blackhawk, apache guys are pricks ) Talk to the Avionics guys, they should be able to solder it up for you, I could have started a business with all the laptops and xbox's I had to fix for people while I was there.

Heh... that would be cool... too bad I'm nowhere near any flying unit (even though I'm Air Force).

I actually got a guy on the contour.org forums wanting to help me out... guess he used to work for Dell and can hook me up with a sorta cross shipment over here.

Hell, if you are Air Force you should be coming home in just a couple weeks right?

Just messing with you, when I was in Iraq, I was talking to some Air Force guys and there were complaining about how long they'd been there(2 months) and that they weren't going home for a few more weeks. I let them know that I'd been there over a year already and they were still going home a couple months before I was and they shut up. In all honesty though, if I were to do it all over again, I'd probably be in the Air Force.

Heh.. ya... You're right about the AF guys, they think the 4 month (normal length) is really long. I'll be here till around my 6 month mark, hopefully a little more to get the short tour out of it (so I don't have to go to Korea any time soon).

My best friend is up in Baghdad... Been there before I even knew I was coming over, and I'm leaving a month or two before him. Good thing the APOD had his unit come through here for R&R both times. Kinda cool just happening to be in the same place 6,000 miles away for a couple hrs.

Read an article in AF Times that said the Army is going to start cutting back on the combat support units and bring the AF/Navy in to replace them. Said stuff like engineers (like me), cops, and special forces are the ones most likely to go. Hell, I'll come back over.
