I went on newegg and found this USB 2.0 external hard drive enclosure for $30 $35 with shipping! Its pretty cool I didn't feel safe with the knowing that i could possibly damage the hard drive in my sager which is a scary thought but just incase i can backup everything on to my 60gig Maxtor!
Pics? Yes!

Dang, that's nice. Might nice indeed. I've always felt external hard drives are one of the best things since fried rice.

I'd like to be able to boot off them as well. Wouldn't that be hunky? Then you could have a half dozen systems, just pick the one you want to boot up on.

And for safety's sake, backing up to an external is the simplest and most effective means there is. If you have two or more, you can just switch them dailly. With good connections, the write speed of the drive is the bottleneck. Say you get 100 mbs, that makes 40 gigs of data transferred in under 10 minutes. With you doing next to nothing in the meanwhile.

Just wondering why you chose a 5 1/4" enclosure for a 3 1/2" drive?

are you referring to the enclosure? If so, how would mac "beauty" it up? Its not meant to look pretty. Thats why it was $35 and not $135.

Also, since I chose the 5.25" as well,,,heres the reason. I had bought a 3.5" enclosure for my external hard drive and a 5.25" for the internal dvd writer I was to buy. I found a greta deal on a dual format external 4x writer so i got that. Then I had this case sitting around. I noticed the 3.5" didnt allow any air circulation for the hard drive, and also got quite hot. I put it in the 5.25 which has its own internal fan as you can see from the pics, and to the best of my knoledge it is kept cool now. Allbeit noisy, but cool. I might switch back to the 3.5 because i cant handle to nonstop fan noise. Fan is always on no matter what,,,no temp sensor or anything.

Two of my friends just bought the Lacie "Big Drive" that thing is awesome. Firewire 800 and a whole lotta space. Now if only sager would include Firewire 800 in their laptops.

Isnt FW800 only for Macs still?

Nope, firewire 800 is also available for Windows products (hopefully Linux soon). PCI is a standard.

My god it turns crazy when I leave. But anywho, I don't see how its "butt ugly" it's an external hard drive its not supposed to be astatically pleasing! And its not Just 5.25 its also 3.5'' also as seen in pic I could put a hard drive and or a cd-rom drive if I wanted but it all works out for me, Its currently hidden under the desk out of the way.
