I recently had the good fortune to receive a semi-broken laptop from work. It has a few annoying issues, but other than those it works great.
Essentially it has bootup and shutdown issues. Sometimes it won't boot up (won't leave the BIOS), and sometimes it will freeze on shutdown. Also, the CD drive is rarely if ever recognized by Windows. The drive will light up and eject just fine, but for some reason is seems as though the connection is poor. I actually swapped the drive with a different one from another broken computer at work, and it still won't work.
Anyway, I assume that the bootup and shutdown problems have to do with this drive, since taking it out often fixes the bootup problem. It's odd though, since sometimes when there is no drive in the computer it still won't boot. However, if the drive is in and the computer fails to boot, it almost always fixes the boot problem to take the drive out and start the computer.
Once Windows is booted the computer is absolutely rock solid (in fact I'm using it to type this), but shutdown and startup have problems. Anyone experience a similar problem or have any ideas?
Thanks for reading my excessively long post by the way.
