Oh man, I wish they would have put a 6600go in this revamped model

I bought a S460 last week and it didn't game very well at all. It might have benched in 3dmark faster than the S360 but it didn't seem to perform as well in games. I could tell when it would start eating into system memory because if I bumped a quality setting up just enough the entire system would lag by 1/4 of a second or so. I guess the fact that its now using dual channel 533 DDR2 that might help the "turbocache" part of the video memory, but it still would have been nice to get a 6600go, if anything to finally have a subnotebook with an 8-pipe GPU solution!

The funny thing is I ended up picking a closeout S360 on saturday at micro center, and even with its radeon 9700 w/64mb ram, it actually outperformed the S460 as far as gaming went. Needless to say, the S460 went back.

A new cooling fan would be good, the one that the S460 uses can hardly keep its temps under control.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

The Radeon 9700 in the S360 is great, but it's showing its age. I would love it if Sony were to find a way to shoehorn something like an x600 or a 6600 into an S-series chassis.

the 9700 is about as fast as x600 so is the 6200 OC'd (they are both a bit slower, but it not really that big)

but look at the 6400 card its only got 128MB of total shared ram, that means 32 on chip, they flashed the bios basically, the models with 64mb of on chip ram come with 256mb total, so they did what i was try to get everyone with a 6200 to do, flash their bios.

and the fan, well I don't know how good that will be, if its quieter, then it will move less air, making the S hotter, if its louder, then we reach almost DTR level fan speeds, so I will hold out on my fan vertict for a while.

Basically so they did the only thing they could do, not f*** with a great setup, go sony, we love the S.

EDIT: I like the extra black, but I am not buying a new unit because of it, and it actually is a step down now that i think about it, less Magnesium Alloy.

Heard these are the improvements made to the S, from this site:

http://www.avic.co.jp/blog/review/ar...5/08/index.php

"Fin form and the quantity of the fan for cooling were modified, the aerodynamic volume displacement improved, heat dissipation characteristic and quiet sound characteristic were improved."

Also the S with the 6400 go, can access up to 256MB provided the system is equiped with at least 1g of ram.

Not bad, seems like they systematically addressed all the issues that people were complaining about...and perhaps now a more worthy successor to the S2/S3. I think the 6600 would have been too much for the current chassis to handle. Anyone want to buy an S460?

or, you could just buy the fan assembly, and install it.

so will the new s series be the same price initially as current ones and the current one s willl take a price cut or will the new ones be more expenssive for the first couple months?

Is the weight/battery life the same as the current s4xx series or slightly worse because of the small graphics upgrade? From the linked article it says yes but is there another source, or will we just have to wait?

Finally is this a 256mb or 128mb card?

Thanks in advance
Nick

I got that information straight from the Sony Japan site. Dunno if that is subject to change.
