Is 8 lbs heavy?

For traveling? This year I won't be doing much just moving my laptop around the house, occasionally to friends house. But next year I'm visiting China so something portable would be nice for the plane, visiting different cities, and etc. So if I buy the Dell Insipiron 9300 would it be too heavy?

It's not the lightest laptop out there, but it's not too bad. I believe 8lbs is about the same as a gallon of milk, just to give you an idea.

I have an 8lb laptop...its not for everyday carrying around, but the once a week or so I need to take it to class its do able. With it in my backpack I can usually put in a couple of text books and a couple of spirals and its not too heavy.

my lappy is roughly 7.9lbs and its not too bad overall. you wouldn't want to carry it EVERY DAY, but once in a while, its doable

8 should be fine, it's lighter than you think

A gallon of water weighs 8.8 pounds, for reference.

Oooh......going to China with that thing is a bad idea. Take it from me. I've gone to China twice, and while you may be sitting around watching TV over there, I wasn't, and all of the stuff I had to carry around made my life very uncomfortable. Adding another "gallon of milk" will bog you down.

I carry an 8 pound notebook to work with me every day. Maybe my Booq backpack has something to do with it, but it doesn't seem that heavy to me at all. YingYang has a very good point though, if you're on vacation the extra weight can become a problem. But for everyday use, I've found that 8 lbs is acceptable.

Yeah, carrying 15.4" notebooks and larger in a backpack makes it much more manageable than a shoulder case, I would think. Anyways, I love my i9300, and i don't find it too heavy at all. Very easy to carry it with one arm from one research lab to another room (inside the "clean room"). A little harder when you're bringing along the AC adaptor with that same arm.

Anyways, yeah, the i9300 is not too thick, not too heavy, and just really nice.

8 lbs will be the MINIMUM that you have to think about with this laptop...

8 lbs for the laptop... a couple more lbs for the bag itself (leather can really get heavy)... your AC adapter and whatever else you might just happen to carry in that bag adds more weight too...

lol no point in going to China just to watch tv.. also I don't even understand Mandarin/Cantonese.. I'm going be visiting Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong. They'll be crowded as shlt though.. I'll probaly buy a lighter laptop, since I will want to bring my laptop with me everywhere I go.

yeah 8lbs. for everyday travel is hard, heck 6.5lbs gets heavy after a while

Nah than I would have to wait like another year I can just buy one in 1 month. I'll check them out though. My dad lives in China right now, but some of the smooth talking comp dealers might trick him into buying a crappy laptop so I'll just stick to buying one in US.

Nah, I work out few times a week, so I have decent strength for my age (15). Not completely jacked, but oh well I'll work on that when I'm older.

Let's not have any more of this false bravado here.

No one says you'll collapse from carrying 8lbs.

Merely that every lb of added weight becomes increasingly annoying the longer you have to carry it.

So cut this bullshit machismo.

it depends...For me 8lbs is too much and 6lbs is just perfect...Its only 2 lbs, but also the i9300 is a 17inch...Its big

If you are going to be doing a lot of walking (it is China after all), I would go with something lighter.
