Best way to rip DVDs? - Page 2

They are, but xvid is free and open source, whereas divx is closed source and payware.
I believe that since xvid split from divx it has been generally regarded as higher quality, but that may be the opensource community tooting its own horn.
-About the new divx6 codec, I've seen the starwars thing and a few other demos and wasnt overly impressed, sticking to xvid.

That's a cool bit of SW, fearno, I must try that.

You're going to need some serious CPU power and a lot of time to convert those VOBs to Divx or mpg4 files. My suggestion, that is if you have enough space in your harddrive, rip the DVDs and just play them "as is" directly from your hard drive. Don't bother to convert it. You will also get better battery life as your CPU and GPU won't have to work as hard to decode/decompress divx or mpg4 files, plus your DVD movies will play exactly as the original (if you don't use the ripper features to compress dual layer DVDs to fit a single layer media.

Also, to make the harddrive DVD images smaller, use the ripper features to "re-author" the DVDs. Get rid of the 5.1 audio track, french and spanish audio tracks, deleted scenes, director's comments, fancy menus, "the making of", and other useless "special" features.

I used FairUse Wizard (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=FairUse_Wizard) to rip the 1st DVD of extended edition of LoTR 2 to Xvid. It took about 5 hours to rip the 1:46 hour clip from DVD to Xvid. When playing the file it used about 20% of CPU on my 9300. Next I will play the file on my 700m to see what kind of battery life to expect. The file size is around 700MB. The video quality is pretty good, but not as good as DVD.

Filthy looters? A pox on you! I have 10 movies on my hd, I own them all. I accept the guy with 1000 is filthy, but hopefully he'll get caught.

I own all the DVDs that I've ripped. I only rip them because I got tired of losing DVDs to scratches caused by my 4 and 5-year old. Besides, it's easier for them to play ripped DVDs by clicking on shortcuts pointed to the ripped DVDs stored in my "jukebox" (300GB Maxtor NAS, running out space fast... need to upgrade to Buffalo 1TB Terrastation NAS soon).
