Acer Aspire 1694WMLI mini-review

Ive had this about a week now and i thought i might toss my first impressions about the laptop up here. If you want me to run anything then please lmk.

Specs:
2.0ghz dothan
1gig of ddr2
x700 64 meg
dual layer dvd burner
15.4 crystal bright screen

Packaging:

Not really an important part of the review but goodness knows if something isnt well packed you might have trouble. In the case of this laptop there was no trouble at all, the laptop was double boxed and was tightly packed with excellent support.

Build Quality:

At first touch the laptop seems decently stiff and well put together. The lines are clean and everything fits together extremely well. I got a dell 6000e in the same day and they were very comparable in construction (except the acer is lighter and thinner ).

The only 2 real gripes i have about construction is that the lcd is rather stiff to put up. If you dont put a hand on the bottom of the lappy to hold it down as you lift the screen it lifts up an inch or 2. Nothing serious at all but just a bit annoying. The second gripe is that the keys on the keyboard seem to "sink" when you type on them. Of course this is common with all lappies so it shouldnt be held against this one.

Screen quality:

I love the crystal bright screen. Its extremely nice in widescreen and is a pleasure to look at. Wish the res went a bit higher but ill take what i can get there for sure

Performance:

Ran 3dmark 2k1 and got 17000 3dmarks when everything was all turned up. Needless to say i was very impressed. Got just shy of 6000 2k3 3dmarks too. Again very impressive. I was able to play doom3 today at 800x600 with a extremely playable framerate today. I didnt think a budget lappy would be able to do this so fast!

The computer boots up much faster than i thought it would for only having a 5400 rpm drive. I was extremely impressed but the speed and consider this an excellent selling point.

THe 2.0 ghz dothan is obviosly not going to be pushed around by any program. Its a fast processor that perfroms extremely well. During regular usage there was no hint of any problems with anything, it sped through it all like it wasnt breaking a sweat.

I have only burnt one disc so far on the dvdrw so im going to hold off any judgement there for the moment, i do however love how it doesnt have the annoying tray that 99% of laptops have for the discs.

Battery Life:

During word processing it seems to get around 4.5 hours of time to a battery. But whne you crank it up it uses alot more juice but still runs for a long time. I ran 3dmark 2k1 for 2.5 hours and the computer was still running. IM guessing 3 hours of heavy usage would be easily attained.

Value:

In my opinion it was a great value to buy. I bought it for 1600 cdn plus shipping and gst. I had a budget of 2k and this filled all of my wants for cheaper than i had expected to pay and in many ways better. From what i have seen of laptops as of late this is without a doubt the best value lappy you can get with a fast processor, good video card, low weight, and great looks.

Pros:
-Fast
-X700 64 meg
-price
-crystal bright wide screen.
-Good battery life
-will play modern games decently

Cons
-X700 64 meg (not 128)
-Odd headphone plug in
-I/O ports all on sides and front, only monitor on back
-No dvi

This was just a brief intro to the lappy and i can add more later for sure. IF there is anything that you would like me to run or try with it lmk and i will do so and post back with my results.

hello

laptop
acer aspire 1694wlmi
intel pentium m 760 2.0ghz, 533mhz fsb, 2mb l2 chache
ati mobility radeon x700 pci express 128mb vram
1gb ddr2

im having a really hard time with my laptop... i got it in two days and until now im trying to fix this problem. first i was thinking that fan working noise was from a cpu or other fan but it's from the graphic card.
after turning the system on i can work for a few minutes but after some time the radeon fan will start working at full speed as if i was playing a game or something but i just open firefox and visit some normal websites, the fan turns on and NEVER stops.
i have this problem in microsoft windows and linux, so it can't be a software/driver problem. im starting to think this is a hardware problem, maybe the fan or card is broken...

the only solution i have found is to use the ati control panel and use the "balanced" settings this way the fan will work normally and only start working at full speed when it is needed to, but those settings are used when the laptop is running with battery, i always use my laptop connected to power, so runing in balanced mode will only make me loose graphic power, the card runs slower!

i tried to use atitools for tweaking/overcloacking and it says that my default clock speeds are core-357 and memory-344

i really don't know what to do... i think im going to send the computer back get the money and buy another laptop (maybe a AMD one with radeon x800)

what do you guys think?

well is ther a way you can check temps? Its everything is getting really hot be happy the fan is one. I would email acer and ask if this is normal. I know that mine is super quiet so but im just a 64 meg card
