half Life 2 help

hi, I am trying to play Hl2 on my new laptop but the game lags every 20 seconds. My specs are wsxga 17" 1680x1050, 3.4ghz (550j), 512mb ram, and nvidia 6800 ultra.
What settings should I play the game on, and does the ram really make a difference to the game or not as I am upgrading to 1 gb soon.
p.s is everyone meant to be completely still at the beginning of the game?
Thanks,

RAM makes a very big difference when playing games. With 512 ram you will get alot of freezing during hard drive access. go for at least 1gig ram. That is definetely one factor causing your problem.

yeah ram is needed, as far why its freezing, I would probably dumb down the resolution to like 1152x800 and then run it, or re-install the game

also, the recommended settings on the game arent all high, should they be? Will they be if I upgrade to 1gb as I would've thought that the graphics card and cpu would be able to handle it. Thanks

v-sync made some of my computers jitter out of control on hl2. I seem to have bad luck with v-sync

I think Ram is what is bothering you...about being completely still, are you thinking about when u r rifing the train? yeah...until you get down

It is a laptop, so maybe you should back off the graphics settings a bit and see how it behaves.

You should also check your computer for spyware, and if you have virus monitoring software, you should shut that off when you play.

Every twenty seconds sounds to me like something in the background is running.

Also, what settings are you using on your pagefile? Microsoft manage, or do you have it set differently?

This may be wrong, but I remember when HL2 was first released, a couple people were having problems with HL2 freezing up consistantly every couple seconds. I ran into the same problem, but I can't for the life of me remember what I did to solve it. Its worth googling for sure...
