Unleaded's MSI MS-1012s and MS-1013 preview - Page 2

Can the MSI 1012 whitebook handle PM Banas cores AKA First Gen PM's. My CL50 has a cracked screen, but everything eles is still good. Thus I want ebay the CL50 for parts ect.. and get a MSI 1012 and stick everything in.
yes, it will handle the older pm's.

So is this review ever going to happen? I would really like one, especially between these two because I am trying to decide between them right now.

What's the cheapest place to purchase a barebone of these? I can only find them at around $750ish.. and thats pretty expensive.

I am waiting for a review. THis will tell whether the MT turions are better or the centrinos in battery life.

btw. I think the older centrino technology matches the MT turions in battery life.

can some1 confirm???

the MT turions are comparable with Pentium M, the ML definitely were not. something said 21-27 watts for latest Ms and 25 for MT..

speed, turion a lot faster than the benchmarks showing only slightly faster than pentium M, since they were running on 32bit OS..the second half of the general-purpose registers werent even being used! going from gentoo 32 to 64 was a huge difference, about 30% boost.. sadly the increased bloat of windows (all libs and lots of services running twice, x32 and x64 versions) more or less counterbalances any increase there..

yeah, page has them for $666 or so, on dealtime or maybe froogle..anyone ordered from them? a third of the reviews are negative..mostly saying stuff took a while to arrive or they lied about the stock (which makes sense, since theyre the only store that actually has all the parts to put one of these beasts together).

if you dont mind paying an extra $1-200 or so for someone to put it together, rawpowerpc looks good...the assembly manual every step is like "be very careful or you will permanently damage the part and the machine!" so maybe someone who has put a few together would be a good idea.. after disassembling my thinkpad (shitty A series) about 10 times to try to fix power-cable connection and ethernet disconnect issues, the parts became kind of frayed and it was more or less impossible to click it all back together right..

asked newegg to stock the 1013 and 1029, not sure why they dont as they carry hella MSI stuff..hopefully they get them in soon as i'd prefer to order from someone i can trust..

and thats all , well actualyl fords8 if you read this, what store are you running? laptoplogic doesnt look like it has a 'buy it now' section but every other message mentions purchases...so im a bit confused

Yes but remember that 25w and 35w rating is for the CPU and the northbridge, which is built in. It's also their rating at full tilt. Not sure what intel rates their chips at.

FYI

the new 1012BT edition has built-in bluetooth and a different cosmetic look, doesn't use the problematic 6855 bt/wireless card, you can use your choice of wireless card and still have the bluetooth.
yes but what is the difference in battery life on these two msi machines???

This is some bad info. I personally get an average of 3:45 hours out of my Ferrari 4005. It has an ML chip in it and it runs very smooth and quick. The Pentium M power rating is for the processor at 75% load. However, the rating for the Turions is at full tilt and AMD quotes that only the most strenuous apps will cause the Turion to have to use 35 watts. I tested my systems wattage requirements when running firefox and word with screen brightness at 75% and the wattage was right around 40 watts (I think). I imagine the ML Turions at a normal CPU load, say 75% load would be on average right around 24-27 watts. I am not trying to say that you are wrong about the battery life of the ML vs. the MT, I am sure the MT chip gets much better battery life and I also know that most Pentium Ms get more than four hours (but there are a lot of Pentium Ms that do not get four hours too). Personally I have been very pleased with my Ferrari and I am suprised at how much battery life the lappy gets. Cheers

here's a shot of the new 1012bt next to the old 1012. (swapped out parts)
totally cosmetic, but i like the new mouse buttons, the feel of the palmrest (not as smooth/slippery), and obviously the bluetooth is nice.

Also, top is silver instead of black. But the indicator lights are better, now Wireless is green light, bluetooth is blue light, and with both on it's kind of a Cyan color (light bluish-green).

oh, and the battery life is just over 4 hours.

Thanks for the picture. I'm also eagerly waiting for the finished review of the 1012.

I'm thinking about getting one of the new 1012 bluetooth edition laptops.

Can someone who has a 1012 or 1012 (w/ bluetooth) comment on fan noise? Does it come on often, and when it does, is it loud?

Any issues w/ heat?

Thread Starter
I apologize I've never gotten around to a thorough rundown of both of these systems. I've been quite busy of late and it just hasn't come to pass.

As for experiences with the MS-1012 BT Edition, CoffeeShark might be able to offer some insights as I know he has worked on one...I have not yet done so.
Pockie,

no heat issues with the 1012, normal slight-warming over the hard drive area (palmrest), bottom has only very slight warmth.

Fan noise is pretty minimal, it has the same design as the regular 1012 and doesn't kick on a lot after bootup is complete. It's not a loud fan at all, but it's not a totally silent system either. If you're not really stressing the cpu, it rarely kicks in.

I like the 1021bt more than the regular 1012 just for feel and look, although the chassis itself is basically identical.

The one i put together has been with my real-estate friend for over a month and he likes it a lot, no issues at all.

if you dont care about turion vs centrino (1) and price is no object (2) theres some other very competent 12"s out there. namely the thinkpad X41/2 and Samsung Q30 (also sold as Dell X1, which is different than Samsung's X1)
ility

1) why AMD is good: if you want a low-power/cool 64bit 12 inch this is the only game in town (i think ASUS has something coming)..my Desktop runs A64 and i do a lot of development so its important to be able to share the binaries between machines, i wouldnt be able to do this with a Centrino, also the added plus of distcc and gentoo binpkg sharing becomes a possibility, so AMD was a nobrainer - if i could wait another year for Apple 13" Merom-powered iBook i would proably be happy with that..but Taiwan (and Dresden) is way ahead of Cupertino

2) why barebones is good: do you really want to pay for windows especially when youre not going to use it? what abbut paying for that crap 256 mb dimm and 4200 rpm 20 gb hd that youre going to remove? a total waste, and if youre going to have to open it up and swap out junk just to get the machine you wanted in the first place...

in summary: if it was me, the 1013 definitely, otherwise it would be a tossup between this and whatever centrino barebones from asus or a yonah-update to Thinkpad X series..

Battery life: which is the best ?

I am hesitating between a S260 (PM 730) and a S270 (MT30), both with 60GB 5400rpm, 768 DDR333, white case with 8 cells battery.

I worry about the battery life: I would like to be able to work up to 5h with it.
On other forums, some users says they reach 4:45 with divx playing on a S260 with max brightness, others only 3h with a S270 (MT30) on same conditions.
On the other hand, the laptologic review says that the ML is consuming less than the PM in some cases...

Did anybody made a battery life comparison between the 2 MSI laptop under the same conditions?
So Unleaded can you confirm that a similarly configured 1012 will get better battery life than a 1013?

just for kicks, here's a link to someones attempt at disassembling a 1013.. looks... fun...

Some description step by step would be nice!

Those pictures are actually from the review I wrote about the lappy. You can read it at http://fryfrog.com/reviews/msi-ms-1013/ which does have some step by step type instructions.
