mouse stutters

at some times my 9300 seems to stutter, even when doing nothing taxing, just some instant messenging and surfing. my 9300 was runnin smooth as butter when i first got it, but i think now its stuttering due to the fact that i copied alot of dvds onto my HD then burned them onto blank dvds (one bad part of not having 2 optical drives). of course i deleted the files afterwards, and defragmented and all, but it still stutters noticably, like every 3 or 4 seconds the mouse will stop and then jump. music playback is fine. do i need to reformat? i really dont wanna go through backing up all my crap and resintalling. just wanna know if any1 has any tips.

Have you defragmented the hard drive lately?

Is it the touchpad or an external mouse. My touchpad stutters or locks up all the time, when the computer isn't busy at all.
