hey people,
so last night i went to turn off my 8790 and it wouldnt turn off by itself. so i used the power button and then decided to feel the power brick as i often do......it was pretty hot. i will be taking a more sober look at it today at lunch and after work, but i was wondering how many of you have had to replace your power supply and what symptoms you might have experienced.

i have searched the forums and read about some explosions, melting, sparking, etc.......but not much on any indicative pre-crap the pants behavior.

They do get a bit heated. Make sure taht there is plenty of good air flow around it and you shouldn't have a problem. Mine is on much of the time - often for days on end and I have yet to have a problem (as he is knocking on wood).

i just had my power brick replaced, it was making small sparking/cracking sounds (like what a short circuit sounds like). so i asked them to replace teh thing before it died completely. The sounds would happen off and on with no apparent cause or pattern, sometimes i would notice a faint metalic smell when it was clicking alot. if you are still in warranty i would have tehm replace is ASAP so you arent caught without power.

thanks guys, i checked it out at lunch with no unusual heating or anything going on. i will probably order another unit and have it shipped down here as a backup. wouldnt hurt as there are no flights between february and august.

My AC unit has worked fine for 1 1/2 years.

But the Auto unit I had gotten failed shortly after getting it. Should have seen about getting it replaced but didn't. Wasn't a great need at the time. Now I could reall use it.

Might not hurt getting a spare AC unit with the delivery problems you would have.

id like to bring down an entire spare computer.........getting my wife a notebook within a month, but it would be nice to have one of those compact desktop units to leave down here between contracts. in any case, i havent had anymore problems as of yet.....but this would be the time for crap to fizzle, instead of the beginning of winter.

Try here: http://www.pctorque.com/hardware.php#117

Or you could bring it to a local electronics shop and see if they can't just put a new "end" on it that will fit the 8790. I believe that the plug for the 8790, unlike other Sager models, is a pretty common part.

Might help, but ontop of having the Antec cooler underneath my 8790, blowing upwards... I also have a small house fan blowing at the laptop from the side that also blows over the powerbrick keeping it quite cool actually. Hard to feel it has any temp.
