Please help. Major desktop issues.

I'm having major trouble with my older Compaq desktop.

I haven't used it in about a month, (my primary computer is my Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook). Earlier today I started up the Compaq because I wanted to hook-up dial-up to it and that's where the trouble started. The computer was running super loud and it was VERY laggy. I closed all the programs that I had running, and decided to let it calm down. It never did, so I rebooted and once I got to the desktop screen I received a message stating that there was a bad error when Windows was trying to load. Then all of a sudden the screen went blank and a blue screen explaining something about the error came up for a few seconds (I didn't have a chance to read it, it was gone so quickly.), after that the computer shut off completely.

I tried restarting, but no luck. The stack goes on, it lights up and I'm able to open/close the disk drives and stuff. The monitor, however, isn't going on. When I press the power button, it doesn't turn green, it stays at that copper color light.

I've had trouble with this PC for a long time. Could it be that it died out?

Open the case and check all your connections. While you're at it look for anything burned and take a whiff and see if you can smell something burned.. Sounds like it didn't enjoy the month long vacation you gave it..

So, your saying that the computer could have burned out?

When I do open the case, if something is burned, do I just take it out? And, by connections, what do you mean?

I'm sorry, I'm not the best at technical stuff.

If I had known this would have happen, I would have kept putting the PC on. Come to think of it, when I first hooked it up in a new area a few months ago, there were some sparks from the power-cord, when I was plugging everything in. Not bad electrical ones, just slight ones. I'm wondering if that did it.
