FC4 and Asus Z70Va - Page 2

Hot damn!

I already had the ability to undervolt the GPU. ATI's newest drivers, which just came out the 11th or so, enable the PowerPlay powersaving states. Not only the one state I keep seeing in windows, but an even lower one!

And the best part - it doesn't react to the AC plug. Which means I can keep it undervolted at all times and totally avoid the annoying fan noise. When I feel like doing graphically intensive things... it's only a quick command. I might even write in some sort of e17 module to handle this for me.

This has been a great day. The first time I setup linux on this thing, it took me forever to get every little thing working. I spent 8 hours doing it today and I'm nearly finished. Most of that time I was trying to see if I could use a widescreen resolution with the framebuffer... I found a neat tool called vbetest, but it claims my card doesn't support 1680x1050. I guess widescreen is impossible outside of X server.

I have a few days of work ahead of me, for sure, but I feel good. I have a few leads on getting some of the buttons to work, I have to undervolt the CPU (ugh), fix my touch-scroll (it's hella fast), and some other things I'm sure.

Hi everybody.

I just got a new shining Z70Va...it is a beauty indeed.
Now I need to install linux on it. Considering
the level of success of each distro, if you were
to install linux on it, what it would be ?

Any comments highly appreciated !

Thanks

Unlike most here, I am a big fan of RedHat/Fedora for a variety of reasons - in this instance, because it's worked better with my Sagers than the other distros out of the box.

That said, there's no reason not to try them all! Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora, and [someone throw in their favorite] and you'll have enough experience to figure out which you like. Partiion your drive and run them all for a bit.

PCLinuxOS 9.2 works very well out of the box. I'm fiddilng with bluetooth right now, but you can download with ATI drivers preconfigured and a majority of things work - wireless, sound, screen resolution, touchpad. It's probably the best you can do with no configuration.
