700m vs. X1

Thread Starter
in my search for a laptop, i think i've narrowed my choices down to the 700m and the X1. i need it mainly for taking notes in class, usual office tasks (email, outlook, websurfing), watching the occassional DVD on a plane ride or something, and some light image and video editing. i don't plan to do any real gaming, heavy video encoding, or program compiling on it, because i will be using it in conjunction with a desktop at home.

my main concerns are the following:

keyboard: i hear that the 700m's keyboard is extremely undersized and hard to type quickly with, especially the ., and / keys. i will be taking notes in just about all my classes on my laptop and don't want to be having typos on every other word in my notes or something...

screen: does the glossy screen on the 700m make it a lot better? I will mostly be using the laptop in big lecture halls will fairly dim lighting, but will sometimes use it outdoors in the sun as well (sitting outside between classes doing some catch-up work). i have found that my old laptop, turned at the lowest brightness setting, is rather dim and hard to see in lecture halls (usually have to go up to between 1/4 and 1/2 brightness level), and when turned to the highest brightness setting while outdoors in the sun, i still can't really see anything. will a glossy screen help in my situations?

battery life: basically, the longer the better. i can never get a seat in lecture halls close enough to wall plugs, so long battery life is good. i don't mind swapping out batteries in between classes as long as it's not excessive (like having to swap out between every 1-hour lecture or something). does one have better battery life than the other?

optical drive: on my old laptop, i found myself rarely using the optical drive. i know the X1 doesn't have a built in drive, but is that a major problem, other than the obvious fact of not being able to watch DVDs?

heat: i've read so many opposite opinions on this that i'm not really sure what to believe anymore. i will rarely be using it on my lap (usually will be on a desk or my cooling pad), but i don't want it burning a hole in anything. in terms of specific types of computer usage causing more heat, i'm mostly just concerned with the heat buildup when using basic tasks (having outlook, onenote, a few firefox windows open, and wireless turned on)

comments, suggestions, and anything else that might help me finalize this search for a laptop would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

Having used both, I can give you my opinion:

Keyboard:

The X1 has a larger keyboard than the 700m. They are however both smaller than the keys on a normal desktop. The main difference between the two keyboards are the / and . on the 700m. Some people say they can't adjust to it. My learning curve time to adjust was about 2-3 days. I type 75 wpm on a desktop, and can still type this fast on the smaller 700m keyboard.

Screen: 700m is the hands down winner here. The viewing angles on the X1 are not the greatest, and you really have to tilt the screen, and adjust your seated position before you can view the X1 properly (and even then it is still a little bit sub-par). I use my 700m outside sometimes, but usually in a shaded area. When using it in direct sunlight, it does become a little hard to view. It is defintely usable in the sunlight, but you do get some glare. Also, it should be noted that the 700m screen is reflective, but as long as you don't tilt the screen back past 45 deg. to view, it won't reflect the lights in your classes.

Battery life:

X1, wins by a hair. People claim to get 2hrs 40 min off the standard 3 cell battery X1. My 700m, during normal note-taking and wi-fi use gets about 2hrs 15min using the standard 4-cell. If you get the 700m with the 8-cell battery, then it can defintely be used for 4.75 - 5 hours.

Optical Drive:

If you ever need it, it's good to have it built in. You never know when you might need one. Another consideration, for me, was that alot of my textbooks came with interactive CDs that I was required to use in conjunction with the text. When I went go to the library, it is defintely convienent to have the drive built in. It's really a matter of personal use though.

Heat:

700m wins. The X1 has no built in fan, and even thought the ULV is not very powerful, the temps do get pretty high. Some users around here have made serious complaints regarding this; enough so that they returned their laptops. I can type on the 700m for hours while it is resting on my lap, and it only gets warm. No notible hear from the palm-rest area either.

The X1 is a business machine, and as such, is not as powerful as the 700m. It does however allow you to do all the basic jobs that a busines person would require (ie. MS Office apps, finance apps, etc.). It is lighter, and thinner than the 700m as well. The 700m is more of a home-user/business laptop. It looks a little less professional, and is a little heavier. I use mine for my MBA and Law classes, and take notes on it all day. It it the perfect fit for me since it combines the portability, and features I need.

In all honesty, it really comes down to what you need it for. Make sure to order the complete care on whatever you decide to get it you will be carrying it to class everyday.

Sorry for rambling

As soon as I'll be able to configure X1 under $700 I am getting one.
But I will keep my 700m forever.

Glossy screen: there are different opinions, but I almost wish I got 9300 instead of 6000 because it has the glossy screen.

As of watching DVD's you can always get an external DVD drive and back them up to the hard drive. It's all in software.

Bottom line: to me X1 is way too expensive for mere 1.5 pounds less weight compared to 700m.

It's all marketing.

You buy a latitude, you will pay more, regardless of specs compared to an inspiron..

the latitude is marketed to the business world...so it is priced as such

you pay for a name, (latitude) essentially...and the packaging is different.

I have not seen a X1, but I am a proud owner of a 700m. I a business user. I use it mainly for outlook,xl, powerpoint and to download pictures from my camera. It is a great machine. I will teall you this optical drive is a life saver. You will not know when you need it. If I am going to carry my drive anyway in the bag (as in X1 the drive comes seperate) I prefer a drive like the one in 700m. I had trouble adjusting to the keyboard the first 2-3 days after I got the laptop because I was using inspiron 9100 and it is a desktop replacement style notebook. Actually you will not find the keyboard to be small like some people gripe about. It is very decent size.

I travel (fly) a lot because I have my own business and I will tell you from my experience it is awesome to just open the laptop up and start working. It fits in the tray table perfectly. It is not heavy. The screen is gorgeous after you get to spend time with this baby I will tell you this you will hate all the other screens. The resolution is 1280*800 so you get even more viewing spece on it than a 14 inch XGA orthe same as a 15.4 WXGA.

Get the 8 cell battery. It gives me 5 hrs with wireless.Great to catch a movie on the plane.Hoep I helped

This is true to a good extent, though you do get a standard 3-year warranty for Lattitudes. In Canada, at least, you can't even lower the warranty.

Pitbos covered most of the points/differences between the two. My coworkers has a 700m (which I used and played with for a bit). I ended up going with an X1, because:
- keyboard is slightly bigger--matters to me
- weight is less - 2.5 is ideal - if I'm carrying it to a lot of places, every lb counts

A built-in DVD drive would've been nice, but I'm willing to give that up for the weight savings (and rip stuff to HD).

I'd say that the obvious choice would be to get the machine that best suits/addresses your needs and priorities, which won't be the same as anyone else's.

Personally, I agree with Maine. There's not that much difference in the weight, and without the optical drive, paying that much just doesn't seem to be worth it. If it had an optical drive, I would consider it, but I wouldn't buy a system without an optical drive. I would rather have a Pocket PC and buy one of those external keyboards than buy a system without an optical drive. Of course, that's just me. The X1 is for a certain type of person, and if you fit that profile, get the X1. I would rather have the 700m.

Hopefully the Inspiron 710m will address the issues of it's predecessor. Updated components, lighter & thinner in weight and maybe even a keyboard like the Latitude X1.

BIOS A05 lists an Inspiron 710m, and I have seen a 630m for other Dell downloads. That is probably the 14.1" widescreen I have been reading about online.

Really? I don't know if the 710m will come out any time soon, but the replacement for the 600m should be out in a few months. Of course, Dell doesn't tell anybody anything, so maybe I'm just getting my hopes up for no reason.

I highly doubt the 710m, if it is coming out, will be thinner or lighter. Most mainstream 12" notebooks are around 4lbs, and to make it any lighter would increase the cost. Samsung makes the X1 for Dell and they are really good at making laptops lighter than the mainstream models - but at a premium.

It's definitely possible, but would be unlikely considering how inexpensive the 700m sells for. I would say that they will add sonoma components as well, but one of the reasons I think Dell is able to sell the 700m for such a great price is because it is using older (and presumably cheaper) centrino parts/processors. An improved keyboard would be great though.

they are both great but I now tend to use the X1 more and more than my 700m.
