Can this "HP dv4000" play any of these games?

Here’s what I'm looking at for my laptop...

--HP dv4000--

Pentium M 1.73GHz
Intel GMA 900
1.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB)
60 GB 5400 RPM HD
12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

And this is all for about $1,000 Alittle more after I upgrade the SDRAM

Here's a little list of games I made, that I think I'd like to play on my laptop.

_-Unreal Tournament 2004
_-Roller Coaster Tycoon 3
_-Need For Speed: Porche Unleashed
_-Command and Conquer: Generals
_-Act of War
_-Warcraft 3
_-Medieval: Total War
_-Deus Ex 2
_-Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
_-Beyond Good and Evil
_-Halo for the PC
_-Call of Duty
_-Tron 2.0
_-PainKiller
_-The Simpsons: Hit and Run
_-Tiger Woods 2005
_-Star Wars: Battlefront (1&2)
_-Star Wars: KotoR
_-NeverWinter Nights
_-Rise of Nations
_-Freedom Force
_-Empire Earth
_-Earth 2160
_-Chris Taylor's "Supreme Commander"
_-Star Wars- Empire At War

Ok I'm gunna reiterate.. I'm not asking if this Laptop can play all these games, or if it can play them at Max Settings, although it would be great to play them that way. I just want to know which games would be likely to run at a playable level on this setup. and I know I threw in a few games that aren't even out yet at the end... but eh... They're RTS games, they COULD work right?

Thanks

Short answer: no.

The gma900 isn't that great for games but will play the older games decently. Forget opengl games like Call of duty and new games like tron2.0 though.

It is very hard to find a new, decent gamable laptop for $1000. You NEED to have a dedicated graphics card. I spent months looking, and was seriosly considering buying used.

From the list, it will play about 25% of those. Any game released in 2004 and beyond will really struggle with the dv4000, they may play with 2GB of RAM but don't quote me. The older games (from 2002) should play fine. None of the games will play on max settings but you will be able to play some of them on low to medium settings (for the older games). It is really hard buying a budget gaming notebook as they don't exist. They Gateway that Best Buy sells isn't bad for gaming, but it isn't particularly that good. I think it scores an average of 1200 on 3DMark05 but it costs more than $1000. The dv4000 is meant more for surfing the internet wirelessly and for office applications.

Thanks for the heads up... Don't feel too bad.. I'm able to play them all on my home PC, so I won't "miss out" on any of those...

I'm sure I'll find things to play, old D&D games, BG 1 & 2 and ID 1 &2, Freedom Force (I hope anyway) Unreal Tournament 2004, well I can hope right? Maybe I can scale it down...

_-Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 (doubt it'll run, but its not THAT great)
_-Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed (It should work right? still my fave NFS game...)
_-Command and Conquer: Generals (If this doesn't work I'll play Red Alert 2, and Tiberian Sun again I guess)
_-Act of War (probly alot more of a hog than it looks...)
_-Warcraft 3 (Older game I never got around to playing, maybe I'll give it a shot finaly? What are the odds of this working?)
_-Medieval: Total War (A friend gave it to me, not sure if it'll run, or if its my type of game...)
_-Deus Ex 2 (yeah.. tis ok, Runs great on my PC)
_-Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (I'll just get it on Gamecube)
_-Beyond Good and Evil (ditto)
_-Halo for the PC (eh... I never really liked Halo anyway.. )
_-Call of Duty (I'll live without this)
_-Tron 2.0 (I put it on because it was "older" and I heard it was good...)
_-PainKiller (This games a blast... Works great on my PC, but I guess my laptop won't be so lucky)
_-The Simpsons: Hit and Run (Could work, hope it does... I got it for PC, started it, then stoped playing it, if it runs on the LT, than thats great, What are the odds of this working?)
_-Tiger Woods 2005( How downscalable is this game? If it doesn't work I'll just get Mario Golf...)
_-Star Wars: Battlefront (1&2) (Maybe right? or is this a deff no?)
_-Star Wars: KotoR (I hope it works... but it probly wont.. but then again I never looked into how low it goes...)
_-NeverWinter Nights (This should work 100% cool, right?)
_-Rise of Nations (maybe.. right?)
_-Empire Earth (Again.. maybe... right?)

These last 3 were wishful thinking...
_-Earth 2160
_-Chris Taylor's "Supreme Commander"
_-Star Wars- Empire At War

Hi folks

I ´m looking if Intel GMA 900 can play some strategy games?
I like the Presario v4160EA (Dothan 750) that comes with this gpu.
It´s the same that hp dv 4040.
Can this laptop play Rise of Nations, Empire Earth, Empire Earth II, Homeworld 2, RailRoadTycooon 3 and similars strategy games?

I know that HP-Compaq is no a lappy gamer, but time to time I wish play this games in it.

I need a new laptop and I am thinking on Compaq Presario V4160EA or Acer Aspire 1694 WLMi.

If I can play strategy games whit it, I´ll buy the Compaq. Otherwise the Acer agggg

Sorry my English

Short answer is don't get anything with integrated video. So the other 2 laptops you listed won't be any different. Getting a sub-1000 laptop with dedicated graphics can be done but you gotta have patience and may need to wait for a good deal. My i6000 was only $850 with the $750off coupon.

Hi Folk again!!!!

Here is the answer

The best comparative test about gpu that I find. GMA 900 and 945

You could get an i6000d with 512 Ram and a 128 X300 for around $1000 w/o a coupon

I have the DV4040. Here are some games that I've tried and run well:

C&C Generals w/expansion pack
Unreal Tournament (well, it runs, but runs SO ****ing fast that's difficult to play)
Swat 4 (Just a little slow)
Codename Panzers phase one and phase two (runs great)
Commandos 3 destination Berlin
Brothers in arms: road to hill 30 (runs great, a big surprise for me)
Call of duty

Games tried that failed to run:

Cossacks 2 napoleonic wars
Doom 3
Half life 2 (runs, but very slow, and I read somewhere that there's a workaround tweaking the .ini file,
but haven't tried it yet)

I'll update if I try some other games. By the way, this is a very good thread,
but maybe it reffers to the games played by the GMA 900, not the DV4000.
That's because the processor in this machine is very powerful, and 1Gb ram,
that's good. The real bottleneck here is the GP, but I think that is not as bad as they say. Cheers.

Brothers in arms: road to hill 30 seams to work really well on laptops even though its not supported... HL2 though should work well with out any tweaks...

Nah, I´ve tried it and the framerate sucks. Only the first chapter works well, in the one that you don´t have a gun to shoot nothing. The minute you start shooting, the fps drops. There is a tweak on a .ini file, that allows you to run the game in Directx 8 mode, and is supposed to increase performance. I haven´t got the game, just tried the demo. If anyone find the tweak and work let us know. Cheers.

The demo rates sucked for me too... but on my old 9000 IGP i got apx 30fps at all times... Thats with the full...

Hey

The DV4000 will soon be available with the Radeon X700.

I was wondering whether games will suffer from the slow ATA HDD. Or does DV4000 have SATA?
