What processor is better?

Amd or Intel?

What are they both ment for? Thanks!

I smell smoke.
They can both be used for different things, AMD i would say is more for gaming.

i really don't have a prefferance.

my main computer is my uniwill with an AMD64 3200+. It works, less heat than a P4, the 64 bit is very nice, and overall its a very stable chip.

my secondary laptop, the thinkpad with a P3 1.133ghz also just works and gets the job done. not very hot, and the battery life is around 3.5 - 4 hours, not bad.

my bro's lappy is Asus Z71v w/ Dothan 1.86. I dont get to use it much, but today i noticed heavy lag while scanning with Spybot and trying to do other things. granted its a mobile chip, its not really for power users. but overall the job gets done eventually.

-st- i guess what i am trying to say is well....a CPU is not something that really makes a differance. its just a chip deep inside the laptop that makes the thing run, sure there are slight differances in speed and behavior, but at the end of the day, just doing every day tasks you won't see it. the brand also doesn't matter, because people just dont care if you have an "Intel Inside" or "AMD" sticker on your laptop (i have none....not because i ripped it off, but because i never got one...only have an ATi sticker).

I used to be like Intel but I perfer the AMD for gaming

what CPUs are we compairing from the companies, I'm not a fan boy, i go for the best performing chip on the market.

I like the FX-55 but I guess the bad boy is the new FX-57?

best amd chip under 300$? for gaming use and fast

Except for some extremely specific uses, AMD will provide you the best overall performance and typically at the lower price.

I use both too, but only one is an AMD (64 3200+ 1Mb cache). My Intels are the one in my sig, 2.6C, 2.4 and 2.7 celerons in the kids and an old, yet faithful PIII 1 Ghz. I also have an antique laptop with a K62-400, but that isn't even worth mentioning (piece of crap).
I'll just say all modern CPUs are hundreds of times better than the bad old days. The chipsets are also a huge improvement. I can't imagine going back to my original Cyrix M120 (or whatever it was called), that thing was awful.. Nothing was stable back then I don't think.

gaming - AMD
Software - Intel (full intel would bereally nice)
I'v seen a full (and when I say full I mean everithing) intel 300 MHz computer and runed almoust as good as a 7/800 Mhz Amd.
I personally own a amd (duron actually) easier to upgrade the CPU.
I invested in a laptop now but my next Cpu will be probably a Barton.

Saying "sofware" is pretty vague. There are very few applications that Intel still holds a performance lead in, and they are very specialized applications the general user will never use.

in my own opinion, i think intel is a little faster and outpoweres amd but just a little everytime, but amd im sure is good for gaming. anyone have a chip reccomendation for below 150$?

Real world tests show AMD outpowering Intel in pretty much everything, severely in gaming (AMD has been the gaming chip of choice since the original Athlon). Even the S754 Sempron (the budget chip - celeron competitor) betters the P4 in many cases.

As for a chip recomendation, it depends on purpose. Do you need the power of a P4/A64 (gaming, other heavy CPU use), or will the PC be used for general purpose (internet, office, etc). If looking for the more powerful solution, Any preference in socket? Will you be doing much multi-tasking (one of the few areas a single core P4 will flex some muscle vs. a single core A64)?

multitasking as in? im mainly looking for gaming. im pimpin out my hp so i might get a new processor, it has a 2.8 intel but i want fatster and better for gaming. as far as that i am not familiar with chipset or anything lol
post #17 of 46
If gaming is your goal, then AMD is by far the best choice. By multitasking, I was making reference to Intel's HT technology. It helps a good bit on single core processors when doing more than one CPU bound thing at a time. Nothing like dual core, but still better than no HT.
Dump the Hyperthreading and just get a real dual core processor like the AMD Athlon 64 X2. Plus, it will cost you about half of the Pentium D.

AMD for desktops, Intel (Centrino) for laptops.

I prefer AMD for desktops, AMD for laptops . Of course 2.5 hours on battery is plenty sufficient for me though.
